Family lawyer marketing for a reader who takes months
Family clients research for weeks or months before instructing anyone. In New York, 14,700 people a month search family and divorce terms at $30.41 a click, measured 3 August 2026. A site built for that market has to survive being read 4 times by the same person, not once.

Why is family law a slower sale than any other practice area?
Because the client is deciding whether to end a marriage, not choosing a supplier.
A person who has been rear-ended calls someone within days. A person charged with an offense calls within hours. A person considering a separation reads for a long time first, often tells nobody, and arrives with the decision largely made. The website is not the last thing they see before calling; it is what they keep going back to while they decide.
That changes what the site is for. Most legal marketing is built to convert a first visit: a headline, a proof bar, a form. A family site is read by the same person on separate occasions, weeks apart, each time with a different question, and re-found through a search engine rather than through your menu.
The admission that goes with that: nothing on a website shortens that process. We cannot make a person decide sooner, and a supplier who says their work compresses a family client's timetable has not measured that either.
What do marketing lawyers do?
The phrase gets typed by two different people, and only one of them is reading this page.
Some searchers want a lawyer who advises on advertising and marketing law. The rest, the ones this page is for, want the people who market a law firm. That work is four things in order: decide which of the practice's questions to answer in public, write those answers as pages, fix the technical layer so the pages load quickly and can be read by a machine, and leave the fee page to the firm, because we do not set fees.
In family law the first of the four is most of the job. Choose the wrong questions and the site is a brochure ranking for the firm's own name and nothing else.
How much do lawyers spend on marketing?
We do not know, and we will not estimate it.
There is no survey of law firm marketing budgets in our data, so any percentage-of-revenue figure on this page would be invented. What we do hold is the cost of buying the traffic, measured 3 August 2026 across 20 US cities, and our own prices.
In New York, family and divorce searches run at 14,700 a month with a cost per click of $30.41. One hundred of those clicks is $3,041. That is arithmetic on a measured click price, not a forecast of what anything returns. Against it, the Practice Sprint is $1,450 and the build tier is $2,900, fixed and published.
Of the 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, twelve published a price at all, five showed only a "from" range, eight claimed a guarantee of some kind, and one offered work with no minimum term. Two sit on opposite sides of that count: paperstreet.com published a price, themodernfirm.com did not. We record which page had a figure, never what it was.
What should a family firm publish for a reader who keeps coming back?
Pages organized by where the reader is in the process, not by what the firm sells.
- What happens, in order. Each stage named, with how long it takes and who does what. This is the page they come back to.
- What it costs and when it is paid. Not a number we supply. The firm's own.
- What happens to the children. The largest single reason people delay, and the question a general family page never reaches.
- What happens to the house. Second largest, and separate enough to deserve its own page.
- Whether it has to go to court, and what changes if it does not.
- A page per fee earner, named, with the kinds of matters they actually take.
Six or seven pages that get revisited beat thirty written once. Three mechanics matter more here than on a faster practice area:
- A visible date on every page. A reader returning in month four wants to know the answer has not aged since month one.
- No gate in front of the reading. A document demanding an email address before it opens is a document this reader closes.
- Internal links that follow the sequence. They read about the children in March and need the costs page in June, and the path between the two belongs inside the page rather than in a navigation bar.
What does the demand look like, city by city?
Wide enough that a national average would mislead every firm reading it.
| City | Family and divorce searches/mo | Cost per click |
|---|---|---|
| New York | 14,700 | $30.41 |
| Chicago | 11,000 | $34.89 |
| Charlotte | 5,800 | $19.36 |
| Boston | 1,590 | $19.82 |
Measured 3 August 2026 across 20 US cities. The dataset counts family and divorce as one category, so these figures cover both. A Chicago click costs about 1.8 times a Charlotte one, which is arithmetic on the two measured numbers rather than a claim about either market. The click price matters to a firm that never intends to pay it because it prices the competition rather than the client.
What does it cost, and how do you charge?
$1,450 for the Practice Sprint, $2,900 for the build. Fixed, published, no minimum term.
Never per inquiry, per case or per matter. Referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business, and the restriction binds the paying firm as well as the recipient. US lawyer advertising runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently in each state, and which version binds a given firm is a question for that firm and its own advisers.
How long before it produces matters?
Longer than in any other practice area, because the reader's own timetable is added to ours.
Three to four months for movement, six to nine before it can be judged fairly, and then the client's own deliberation on top. A page published in September may be read first in November and produce a call in April, and no analytics package will join those three events up for you. Firms that judge this on first-visit conversion, in a practice area where nobody converts on a first visit, reliably conclude it failed.
If the firm needs matters this quarter, that is paid search, and we do not manage ad spend.

Frequently asked questions
Why is family law slower to convert than other practice areas?
Because the client is deciding whether to end a marriage rather than choosing a supplier. They read for weeks or months, often tell nobody, and arrive with the decision largely made. The site is not the last thing they see before calling.
Does a family firm need a different website structure?
Yes. Pages ordered by stage of the process rather than by service: what happens and in what order, what it costs and when, what happens to the children, what happens to the house, whether it has to go to court, and a page per named fee earner.
How much do lawyers spend on marketing?
We hold no survey of law firm marketing budgets and will not invent a percentage. We do hold click prices: New York family and divorce searches ran at 14,700 a month at $30.41 a click on 3 August 2026, and our own prices are $1,450 and $2,900.
Do gated downloads work for family clients?
Rarely. A reader who has told nobody they are considering a separation does not hand over an email address to read a page. The material is worth more published openly, where it can also be found again by search.
What do you charge, and can you bill per case?
$1,450 for the Practice Sprint and $2,900 for the build, fixed, with no minimum term. Never per inquiry, per case or per matter: referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business and the restriction binds the paying firm as well as the recipient.
How long before this produces matters?
Three to four months for movement, six to nine before fair judgement, and then the client's own deliberation on top. A page published in September can produce a call in April, and no analytics package will connect those events for you.
