Do lawyers have a ranking system?

No. There is no official ranking of lawyers in the United States. Three separate things get called one: seniority titles inside a firm, tiers published by commercial directories, and position in search results. Only 1 of the 3 is what a prospective client sees.

Last updated: 5 August 2026

Which of the three does the question mean?

The question splits two ways — professional standing, and where a firm appears when somebody searches — so this page answers both, standing first.

What people mean by "ranking"Who publishes itWho ever sees itCan a firm influence it
Seniority inside a firm: paralegal, associate, of counsel, partnerThe firm itselfMostly people inside the firmYes, and it is an internal decision
Tiers and lists in commercial directoriesPrivate publishersAnyone who visits that publisherBy submission, and by being researched
Position in search resultsNobody publishes it; it is computed per search, per personEvery prospective client, every timePartly. Never controlled

The three have nothing to do with one another. A named partner of thirty years standing can be invisible on the search a client actually runs, and a two-year-old firm can be the first thing that client reads. Neither fact says anything about the quality of the legal work, which is the honest and unsatisfying core of this question.

Is there an official ranking of lawyers?

No. The lists that exist are published by commercial businesses and are not official.

Three of the 40 sites we read in full on 3 August 2026 are listing and legal-publishing sites rather than marketing suppliers: legal500.com, bestlawyers.com and attorneyatlawmagazine.com. None published a price, which puts all three among the 28 of 40 that did not. We recorded only whether a price appeared. We make no claim about how any of them compiles a list, because we did not measure that.

What matters for a firm deciding whether to pursue a listing is that inclusion is granted by a private publisher on its own terms. It is a real form of visibility with a real audience. It is not a public register, it is not an assessment of competence, and nobody is obliged to recognize it.

What decides where a firm appears in search results?

An algorithm nobody outside Google sees, recomputed for every search and every searcher.

That is why we will not promise a ranking, a position, or a number of clients, and why a supplier who does should be read carefully. Of the 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read on 3 August 2026, 8 claimed a guarantee of some kind. A guarantee here is either a promise about search terms nobody uses or a refund clause that is difficult to invoke.

The ground is also moving. AI Overviews appeared on 39 of the 54 money searches we measured on 3 August 2026, and on 863 of the 1,235 keywords in the wider set. On those searches the visible "ranking" is increasingly a summary that quotes some sources and skips others, which rewards a page that answers a question plainly over one that lists credentials.

Which of the three is worth a firm's attention?

The one the buyer sees, which is the search result, followed at some distance by the directory listing.

A firm's internal titles are invisible to the person choosing a lawyer. A directory tier reaches people who are already in a comparison, and is visible to referrers. A search position reaches somebody at the moment they first go looking, which is the only one of the three that changes whether a firm is considered at all.

The cost of that attention is measurable. In Miami, 1,900 people a month search for a criminal defense attorney at around $60.96 a click, so a hundred of those clicks is roughly $6,096 — arithmetic on figures measured 3 August 2026, not a forecast. That is what appearing costs when it is bought rather than earned.

What none of this fixes: if the constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than instructions, appearing higher produces declined work and a longer waiting list.

What does the work cost, and what is never promised?

Practice Sprint $1,450, build tier $2,900. Fixed, published, no minimum term.

Of the 40 suppliers we read, 12 published a price at all and 1 offered work with no minimum term; 15 of the 62 questions buyers ask on these searches are price questions. We charge by scope and time, never per inquiry, per case or per matter. US lawyer advertising runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently in each state.

The short answer is above. If you want the demand and click figures for your own city, what is missing from your site, and what 40 suppliers charge, the report is free and takes about two minutes: /legal/us/

Where should I read next?

On what any of this costs: how much a law firm should spend on marketing.

On the roles inside a firm that handle the directory and visibility work: the marketing coordinator role, and how a firm's blog reads to a stranger.

On what happens once somebody does find you: the client intake process and an intake form template. By city: lawyer marketing in San Diego.

Frequently asked questions

Do lawyers have an official ranking system?

No. There is no official ranking of lawyers in the United States. The tiers and lists that exist are published by commercial businesses on their own terms, and inclusion is not a public assessment of competence.

What are the ranks inside a law firm?

Seniority titles such as paralegal, associate, of counsel and partner. They are set by the firm, they differ between firms, and they are largely invisible to somebody choosing a lawyer.

Are directory rankings worth pursuing?

They reach people already comparing firms, and referrers, so they have a real audience. They do not reach somebody at the moment they first search, which is the point at which most firms are eliminated without knowing it.

Can a law firm be guaranteed a top search ranking?

No. The result is computed per search and per searcher by an algorithm nobody outside Google sees. Eight of the 40 suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026 claim a guarantee of some kind; we do not.

Which ranking does a prospective client actually see?

The search result, every time. A firm's internal titles are invisible to them, and a directory tier is only seen by somebody who visits that publisher.

What does it cost to appear at the top by buying it?

In Miami a criminal defense click cost around $60.96 against 1,900 monthly searches on 3 August 2026, so a hundred clicks is roughly $6,096. That is the paid price of appearing, not a prediction of instructions.
