Does SEO work for law firms in Australia?

Direct answer

Yes, but slowly, and the Australian case is weaker than the American one. A family law click in Adelaide costs A$15.18, so 100 paid clicks cost A$1,518 and answer the same question in a fortnight, measured 3 August 2026. Organic search takes six to nine months before a fair judgement.

Why is the Australian answer weaker than the American one?

Because the American case rests on a click price Australia does not pay.

In Atlanta, a personal injury click costs around US$149.13 against 12,100 searches a month, measured 3 August 2026. At that price, ranking without paying per click avoids a very large bill, and waiting most of a year to avoid it is rational. Australian legal traffic is not priced anywhere near that, and every supplier repeating the American argument here is quoting a number their reader will never be charged.

When should a firm buy clicks instead?

When the test costs less than the work, or when the answer is needed sooner than the work can give it.

Read the right-hand column against our own published price of A$1,900. In Adelaide family law, Hobart conveyancing and Canberra immigration, a hundred clicks costs less than the sprint. A firm in one of those markets can find out in a fortnight whether the enquiries are the kind it wants, and only then decide whether to buy pages that take six to nine months to answer the same question.

Three situations where paid search is simply the better purchase:

  • The firm needs matters this quarter. Organic search does not deliver in a quarter, and no honest supplier says otherwise.
  • A practice area is being tested rather than expanded. Buying the traffic settles it before anything is written.
  • The work is seasonal. A narrow annual window cannot wait for a slow channel to warm up.

We do not manage ad spend, so saying this sends the work to somebody else. It is still the right answer in those three cases.

What does organic search still do that paid clicks do not?

Two things, and the second is the one that matters here.

Paid traffic stops the day the card stops, while a page that ranks keeps being found. Over three years the arithmetic turns, though where it turns depends on the firm's own click volume and we do not have that number.

The stronger point is coverage. Nobody bids on how is property divided after a de facto relationship or what happens if a will is not signed properly. Those searches are reachable only by having written the answer, and they are read before anybody decides which firm to ring. On the money searches we measured, Google generated an answer above the ordinary results on 39 of 54, and across the wider set on 863 of 1,235 keywords, both measured 3 August 2026. A generated answer cites pages. It does not cite advertisements.

How long does law firm SEO take before it can be judged?

Three to four months for movement, six to nine months before a fair judgement.

Month one is a build month and there is nothing to report at the end of it. The quarter that follows looks like nothing happening, because a page travelling from position 30 toward 11 is shown to more people and chosen by almost none of them. That reads exactly like a supplier doing nothing, which is why the underlying search-by-search data should belong to the firm rather than arrive as a summary.

What will SEO not do for a law firm?

It will not help a firm whose constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than enquiries. More enquiries into a full diary produce longer callback times and worse conversion, not more matters.

It will not produce a promised position, from us or anyone. Nobody controls the ranking. Of 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, twelve published a price at all, five showed only a range, eight claimed a guarantee of some kind, and one offered work with no minimum term. The guarantee count is the reason this paragraph exists.

And it will not settle whether the money came back. That calculation needs the firm's own conversion and matter values, which we do not hold for any market.

The short answer is above. If you want the numbers behind it — demand in your own town, what your site is missing, and what 40 suppliers charge — the report is free and takes about two minutes to request: /legal/au/

Frequently asked questions

Does SEO work for law firms in Australia?

Yes, on a delay of six to nine months, but the case is weaker here than in the United States because clicks cost far less. An Adelaide family law click is A$15.18 against about US$149.13 for personal injury in Atlanta, both measured 3 August 2026.

When is buying clicks the better choice?

When the firm needs matters this quarter, when it is testing a practice area rather than expanding one, or when the click price is low enough that the test costs less than the pages. We do not manage ad spend and still say so.

How much does it cost to test a market with paid clicks?

A hundred clicks costs A$1,518 in Adelaide family law, A$546 in Hobart conveyancing and A$526 in Canberra immigration, which is multiplication on cost-per-click figures measured 3 August 2026 rather than an observed campaign cost.

What does organic search reach that advertising does not?

The questions nobody bids on, which are read before a firm is chosen. Google generated an answer above the ordinary results on 39 of 54 money searches measured 3 August 2026, and those generated answers cite pages rather than advertisements.

How long is month one?

Month one is a build month with nothing to report at the end of it, and the following quarter shows movement that looks like failure because a page climbing toward the first results page is seen by more people and clicked by almost none.

Can anyone promise a ranking?

No. Of 40 suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, eight claimed a guarantee of some kind and one offered work with no minimum term. Nobody controls Google's ranking, and we decline to say otherwise.

Does Australia require a firm to publish its fees?

No. There is no Australian equivalent of the United Kingdom publication rule, so showing fees is a commercial decision about positioning. We are a marketing supplier and give no advice about professional obligations.
