Lawyer marketing in NYC for one attorney, not the firm
One attorney cannot rank for the head terms in a city recording 54,190 legal searches a month. What an individual can move is their own name, one narrow sub-practice and the questions nobody bids on. In that order, and the third of those takes about 6 months to show.

What can one attorney actually reach in a market this size?
Three things, and the firm's head terms are not among them.
New York City records 54,190 monthly legal searches across the eight practice areas we measured on 3 August 2026. Personal injury alone is 14,800 of them at $73.14 a click. We cannot promise a ranking for any of the head terms here and neither can anyone else — 8 of the 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read on the same date claimed a guarantee of some kind, and none of them controls Google's ranking either.
The admission that shapes everything below: an individual competing at the top of this market loses, and any supplier telling you otherwise is selling you the thing they happen to sell. What is left after that is not a consolation prize. It is three specific pieces of ground, and one lawyer can hold all three.
Which New York sub-practices are large enough for an individual?
Two of them lead the entire twenty-city dataset on volume and cost a quarter of an injury click.
| Practice area in New York | Searches/mo | Cost per click | Cost to buy one month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal injury | 14,800 | $73.14 | $1,082,472.00 |
| Probate and estate planning | 7,300 | $19.25 | $140,525.00 |
| Employment | 6,600 | $27.85 | $183,810.00 |
Measured 3 August 2026, Google Ads monthly volume and cost-per-click. The right-hand column is our multiplication of the two beside it, not a dataset figure and not a forecast.
New York's 7,300 estate-planning searches a month are the largest of the twenty US cities we measured, more than twice the next city, Houston, at 2,900. New York's 6,600 employment searches are also the largest in the dataset, ahead of Los Angeles at 4,400. Both cost around a quarter of an injury click.
Read the third column and the case makes itself. The entire New York estate-planning search market costs $140,525 a month to buy at Google's listed prices. Injury costs $1,082,472. By arithmetic, 13% of the money for half the volume. For a single attorney choosing where to spend a limited number of hours, that ratio is the decision.
What happens when somebody types your name in New York?
Usually a directory profile you do not control, and sometimes a different lawyer entirely.
This is the cheapest search an individual will ever win and the one most often left alone. The attorney's own name carries almost no auction anywhere, and in a city this dense it collides with two things: profiles on sites the attorney did not build and cannot edit properly, and other people with the same name in the same profession.
We hold no measurement of how often a New York attorney's name resolves to a page they control, and we are not going to publish one. Nobody has counted it. What can be said without a count is that the name search is the one a referred client runs before calling, and that a page the attorney controls will outrank a thin profile on the same name given something to work with — a biography naming actual matter types, an address, and the practice area written in the attorney's own words rather than a directory's dropdown.
What gets built, and in what order?
Five things. The order is the part that matters, because reversing it wastes the first three months.
- The name page. One page, on the firm's domain if possible and on the attorney's own if not, that resolves the name search to something the attorney wrote.
- One sub-practice page, narrow enough to be describable in a sentence. Not estate planning but the specific thing — the situation a person is in when they start searching.
- The questions asked before instruction. What happens at a first meeting, how long the process runs, what it costs. Nothing is bid on any of them in any practice area, which makes them the only ground in New York that is free of the auction entirely.
- Internal links between the three, so a reader who arrives at a question page finds the person.
- An answer in the first forty words of every one of them. Across the keyword set measured for this program, 863 of 1,235 terms carry an AI Overview and 39 of 54 money terms do. A page that buries its answer gets summarized without attribution and the click never happens.
That is four or five pages, not forty. An individual who commissions forty pages has bought a firm-scale build for a one-person problem, and near-identical pages are the doorway pattern besides — Google removed roughly 80% of doorway pages in measured 2024 core-update cases.
What does it cost, and why never per inquiry?
$1,450 for the Practice Sprint, $2,900 for the build. Fixed, published, no minimum term.
Never per inquiry, per matter or per client. We charge for the work, by scope and time. Referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business, which includes personal injury, and the restriction binds the attorney paying as well as the party being paid. Lawyer advertising in the United States runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently by state, and how it applies to a particular practice is a question for that practice and its own advisers rather than for a marketing supplier.
Of the 40 suppliers we read on 3 August 2026, twelve published a price, five showed only a "from" range, and one offered work with no minimum term. Fifteen of the 62 questions buyers ask on these searches are price questions, which is why ours are on this page.
This does nothing for an attorney whose constraint is hours rather than inquiries, and we do not manage ad spend.

Where should I read next?
The two practice areas where the individual attorney's name matters most and reviews help least: criminal lawyer marketing and criminal defense lawyer marketing.
For the practice area with the slowest decision and the most repeat visits: family lawyer marketing.
The same reader outside New York, and the version with hours instead of dollars: marketing for lawyer and lawyer marketing plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can one attorney compete with a New York firm on search?
Not at the head terms in a city recording 54,190 monthly legal searches. What an individual can hold is their own name, one narrow sub-practice, and the questions before instruction that carry no bidding at all.
Which New York practice areas suit a single attorney?
Estate planning at 7,300 searches a month and $19.25 a click, and employment at 6,600 and $27.85, both measured 3 August 2026. Both are the largest markets of the twenty US cities in those practice areas.
How much cheaper is estate planning than injury in New York?
Buying the whole month of estate-planning search costs $140,525 against injury's $1,082,472, by our arithmetic on the measured volumes and click prices — 13% of the money for half the volume.
Why does an attorney's own name search matter?
It is the search a referred client runs before calling, it carries almost no bidding, and in a city this dense it often resolves to a directory profile the attorney does not control or to a different lawyer with the same name.
How many pages does one New York attorney need?
Four or five: the name page, one narrow sub-practice page, the questions asked before instruction, and the links between them. Forty pages is a firm-scale build bought for a one-person problem.
How long before an individual sees anything?
Nothing measurable in month one, movement at three, fair judgement at six. The name page is usually the exception and often moves inside weeks, because almost nobody is competing for it.
Do you charge per inquiry or per matter?
No. $1,450 for the Practice Sprint and $2,900 for the build, fixed and published with no minimum term, for the work by scope and time. Referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business and bind the party paying.
