Law firm SEO guide: the words that change a decision

If you have never bought this before, the useful starting point is that no part of it is a purchase of position. What is bought is work in 3 places: on your pages, in how your site is built, and in what exists about your firm elsewhere.

Last updated: 5 August 2026

What is actually being bought?

Work, in three places, and none of it is a position.

On the pages. Writing and structuring the pages a person reads before instructing a firm: what an area of work covers, what it costs and how it is billed, what happens in the first two weeks, and who will handle it. This is the majority of the money and the majority of the effect.

In how the site is built. Whether the pages load quickly on a telephone, whether a search engine can read them at all, whether the addresses make sense, and whether the pages link to each other sensibly. Invisible to a reader, and everything published afterwards inherits it.

In what exists elsewhere. The map listing, the directories a firm appears in, and whatever else on the internet mentions the firm. Least controllable and slowest to move.

The admission that belongs at the top of an introductory page: nobody sells position, including us. A supplier can produce better pages, a faster site and a tidier listing. Whether those rank is decided by a system nobody outside it can see. Of the 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, 8 claimed a guarantee of some kind. Every one of those claims is about something the claimant does not control.

Which words do you actually need?

Eight. Each one is defined here by what it decides for you rather than by what it technically means.

WordWhat it means for a buyerWhat it decides
IndexWhether a search engine holds a copy of your page at allIf a page is not held, nothing else about it matters
CrawlThe visit a search engine makes to read your siteA site that blocks it is invisible for reasons nobody will notice
PositionWhere you appear in a list of resultsNothing you can buy. Ask what a supplier will do, not where you will be
ImpressionYour page was shown to somebodyRises first when work is going well, months before clicks do
Search termWhat a person actually typedWhether a page was written for a real question or an assumed one
Map listingThe panel of nearby businesses with a mapRuns mostly on where the office is, so it responds to different work
Structured dataLabels in the page code describing what the page isModest, and inventing labels invites a penalty
AI summaryThe generated answer above the resultsWhether being found means being read or being quoted without a click

The last row is the one that has changed most recently. AI Overviews appear on 39 of the 54 money searches in this market and on 863 of the 1,235 keywords we measured, both on 3 August 2026. A page answering its question in the opening lines is summarized and cited. A page opening with a paragraph about the firm's commitment to service is summarized without attribution, and the reader never arrives.

What should a first-time buyer ignore?

Five things, all of which are shown in proposals and none of which changes a decision.

  • A score out of 100 describing your site's strength. Nobody outside the search engine knows how positions are decided, so any such score is one tool vendor's estimate. Two vendors will give you different numbers for the same site. There is no action attached to either.
  • A position for the firm's own name. A firm ranks for its own name because nothing else is competing for it. It is not evidence of anything, and it will be produced as evidence.
  • Total traffic. A rising total made of people looking for jobs, for the opposing party, or for a different state is a worse outcome than a smaller total of people who want the work. Ask which searches, not how many visits.
  • A count of keywords ranked. A site can rank for four hundred phrases nobody types. The number rises with the size of the site rather than with its usefulness.
  • An automated site report scored out of 100. These are generated in seconds, list dozens of items of wildly different importance without ranking them, and exist to open a conversation. A real audit names the five findings that would change what the firm does.

The general test is the same for all five: if the number moved, what would you do differently? If there is no answer, the number is decoration. That question also works on our own reporting, and it should be asked of it.

What does a firm actually need built?

Fewer pages than a supplier will propose, chosen by what the firm wants more of.

The one decision that most affects the outcome is which areas of work to compete for, and it is the firm's rather than the supplier's. What can be measured is what the attention costs. In Nashville, personal injury draws 3,600 searches a month at around $66.67 a click and immigration draws 2,400 at around $12.91, measured 3 August 2026 across 20 US cities. Arithmetic, not a forecast: a hundred clicks is $6,667 in one and $1,291 in the other, in the same city, for the same firm's website.

A short list is normal: one page per area of work the firm wants, one per question asked before instruction — cost, timescale, what happens first — and one per fee earner. That is eight to twelve pages for most firms rather than sixty. 15 of the 62 questions buyers ask on these searches are price questions, so the cost page is not optional.

Timing, plainly: month one produces nothing measurable, positions begin moving somewhere between months three and four, and the work is not fairly judged before month six. The first quarter shows impressions rising while clicks stay flat, which reads exactly like failure and is the normal shape of progress.

What do the suppliers ranking for guides publish?

Three we read in full, and the only field we will assert about any of them is whether a price appeared on the page.

SupplierPublished a price, 3 Aug 2026What a beginner would get from them
idr.legalYesA published figure, which makes a first comparison possible at all
bestlawyers.comNoA directory listing, which is a different purchase from anything on this page
rep-ink.comNoAgency services, where the first conversation establishes the price

We will not say what any of them charges — the figures our tooling collected mixed genuine fees with case values and fragments, and a wrong number against a named business is not worth publishing. Across all forty, 12 published a price at all and 5 of those showed a range rather than a figure.

Where somebody else is the better first purchase. A firm that wants to understand this rather than buy it should read free instructional material rather than any supplier's page, including this one. And a directory listing is a legitimate purchase that has nothing to do with the work described here, so a firm being sold both under one heading should ask which is which.

What does it cost, and what should nobody sell you?

Practice Sprint $1,450, build tier $2,900. Fixed, published, no minimum term.

Four things nobody should sell a firm at this stage. A guaranteed position, because nobody controls it. A price by the inquiry, by the case or by the matter — referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business, including personal injury, and the restriction binds the paying firm as well as the party paid. Sixty pages, when the search behind them does not exist. And a long contract before anything has been demonstrated: 1 of the 40 suppliers we read offered work with no minimum term.

Lawyer advertising here runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently by state. We are not lawyers and we advise nobody on their own obligations. We do not manage ad spend, and we do not fix what happens to an inquiry after it arrives.

Before you shortlist anyone

Frequently asked questions

What am I actually buying when I buy SEO for a law firm?

Work in three places: the pages a client reads before instructing, how the site is built underneath them, and what exists about the firm elsewhere, including the map listing. No part of it is a purchase of position.

Can a supplier guarantee my firm a ranking?

No. Positions are decided by a system nobody outside it can see, and 8 of the 40 suppliers we read on 3 August 2026 claimed a guarantee anyway.

What is a domain score, and does it matter?

It is a tool vendor's estimate of a site's strength, and two vendors will give different numbers for the same site. No action follows from either, so it changes nothing.

Why is total traffic a poor measure?

Because a rising total made of job seekers and people in other states is worse than a smaller total of people who want the work. Ask which searches, not how many visits.

How many pages does a law firm actually need?

Usually eight to twelve: one per area of work the firm wants more of, one per question asked before instruction, and one per fee earner. A proposal for sixty is selling volume.

How long before any of it works?

Nothing measurable in month one, movement between months three and four, and no fair judgement before month six. The first quarter looks like failure while being normal.

What is the one test for whether a number in a report is useful?

Ask what you would do differently if it moved. If there is no answer, it is decoration, and that applies to our reporting as much as anybody's.
