DUI lawyer marketing: one charge, and no word of mouth

A DUI practice sells one offense to people who will never discuss it afterward. There is no referral engine and almost no repeat work, so every matter has to be found fresh. In Tampa, criminal defense runs at 2,900 searches a month at $71.28 a click, measured 3 August 2026.

Why is a single-charge practice different from a general defense firm?

Because there is one search term set, one competitor group, and nowhere else to go.

A firm that defends assault, theft, drug and driving matters can move its attention around. When one area gets crowded it can build somewhere else, and its site can be broad because its caseload is broad. A DUI practice has none of that room. Every firm in the county is competing for the same handful of searches, the pages all say roughly the same thing, and depth is the only variable left. That points the whole build in one direction: fewer pages, each one answering a question completely, rather than many pages each answering a question partly.

The second difference is the shape of the decision. The reader usually has a date on a piece of paper, so the window is short but it is not instant. They are not grabbing the first number they see; they have a few days and they spend them comparing. A site in this practice area gets read properly, which is unusual, and it means thin pages lose to thorough ones rather than to faster ones.

What replaces word of mouth when nobody talks?

Nothing does, and that is the fact the whole plan has to be built around.

Every other practice area compounds through people. A satisfied client in a property or business matter mentions the firm at work, brings the next matter back, and sends a colleague. A family client tells one close friend. A DUI client tells nobody, because telling anybody means disclosing the offense, and there is no second matter anybody should hope for. The referral pipeline that quietly carries most law firms simply is not there.

The admission, and it is the important one: we cannot build that channel either. Nothing on this page produces a referral, and any supplier claiming their work generates word of mouth in this practice area has not thought about what the client would have to say to produce it.

What follows is an economic point rather than a marketing one. In practices with referrals, the cost of finding the next matter falls as the firm gets older. Here it does not. A firm ten years in and a firm two years in are bidding for the same clicks at the same price on the same day. The only thing in the practice that accumulates is the site: a page that ranks does not have to be bought again next month. That is the argument for doing the slow work, made in the one practice area where there is no other compounding asset to fall back on.

What should the site be built around when there is only one offense?

The questions a person asks in the week after the charge, one page each.

Most defense advice says build a page per charge type. That advice has nothing to give a firm with one charge. The useful division here is by consequence and by stage, because that is how the reader's own questions divide.

What the reader is askingWhat the site should do with it
What happens to my license, and whenIts own page, in the firm's own words for its own jurisdiction
What happens at the first appearanceA plain sequence, dated, for the courts the firm appears in
Is a second offense treated differentlyTwo pages, not one page with two headings
What happens if I did not take the testIts own page; it is a separate question with a separate answer
What is this going to costThe fee structure, what is included, what is billed on top
Who will actually stand up for meA named attorney, with the courts they appear in

Six pages, written properly, beat thirty written quickly. We do not write the legal substance of any of them — the firm does, because it is the firm's name on the page and the firm's jurisdiction being described. We build the structure, the technical layer, and the words around the law.

There is one trap specific to this practice area worth naming. With a single offense and nothing else to write about, the obvious way to fill a site is to duplicate the same page across every town in the county. Near-identical pages on near-identical terms are the classic doorway pattern, and the risk is not that the weakest page gets demoted but that the whole set does. If a town does not get its own genuine content — its own court, its own process, something true only there — it should not get its own page.

What does the traffic cost, and why is there no DUI figure?

Because our dataset does not price this offense separately, and pretending otherwise would be the easiest lie on the page.

CityCriminal defense searches/moCost per click
Tampa2,900$71.28
Seattle1,000$68.23
San Diego2,400$66.03
Charlotte1,000$20.16

Measured 3 August 2026 across 17 US cities. These are criminal defense figures, and criminal defense contains DUI work alongside everything else, so they describe the wider category rather than this offense. Treat them as the price of attention in the neighborhood, not as this practice area's own number.

Two things follow from them. A hundred Tampa clicks is $7,128, which is multiplication on the measured price rather than a forecast of what those clicks return. And Tampa costs about three and a half times Charlotte for the same category on the same day, which is why any national rule of thumb about defense marketing budgets is worth ignoring.

What does it cost, and how do you charge?

$1,450 for the Practice Sprint, $2,900 for the build. Fixed, published, no minimum term.

Of the 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, twelve published a price at all, five showed only a range rather than a figure, eight claimed a guarantee of some kind, and one offered work with no minimum term.

Never per inquiry, per case or per matter. Referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business and the restriction binds the paying firm as well as the recipient. US lawyer advertising runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently in each state, and which version binds a particular firm is a question for that firm and its own advisers.

Three to four months for movement, six to nine before the work can be judged fairly. If the firm needs matters this quarter, that is paid search, and we do not manage ad spend.

What this is worth where you are

In Tampa, 2,900 people a month search criminal defense terms, and Google charges around $71.28 for one of those clicks. That is the category figure, which includes this offense and others. We hold the same figures for 52 cities.

Frequently asked questions

Why do DUI clients not refer anyone?

Because a referral means disclosing the offense to the person being told. There is also no second matter worth hoping for, so the pipeline that quietly carries most law firms is absent in this practice area.

What does that change about the plan?

The cost of finding the next matter never falls with tenure. A firm ten years in bids for the same clicks at the same price as a firm two years in, so the site is the only asset in the practice that accumulates.

How many pages does a DUI practice need?

Around six, divided by consequence and stage rather than by charge: the license question, the first appearance, second offenses, refusing the test, fees, and a named attorney with the courts they appear in.

Should a DUI firm build a page for every nearby town?

Only where the town gives it something true: its own court, its own process, something that is not on the other pages. Near-identical pages on near-identical terms are the doorway pattern, and the risk falls on the whole set rather than the weakest page.

Do you have search figures for DUI specifically?

No. Our dataset prices criminal defense as one category containing this offense and others, so the figures describe the neighborhood rather than the practice area. Tampa ran at 2,900 searches a month at $71.28 a click on 3 August 2026.

Do you write the legal content?

No. The substance is the firm's, because it is the firm's name on the page and the firm's jurisdiction being described. We build the structure, the technical layer, and the words around the law.

What do you charge, and can you bill per case?

$1,450 for the Practice Sprint and $2,900 for the build, fixed and published, with no minimum term. Never per inquiry, per case or per matter, because referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business and bind the paying firm too.
