Law firm SEO marketing: where one ends and the other starts
The phrase joins two jobs that are not the same. SEO changes what a search engine can find and rank. Marketing changes why somebody instructs you once they have found you. Buying the first and expecting the second is the commonest disappointment in this market, and 39 of 54 money searches now carry an AI Overview.

What does the word SEO actually cover?
Four things, and nothing beyond them.
| The four | What it decides |
|---|---|
| Reachability | Whether a crawler can get to the page and read it without running scripts |
| The page's own signals | Its address, title, headings, and whether the answer is near the top |
| What other pages say | Who links to it, and from where |
| Subject clarity | Whether a search engine can tell what practice area and what town this page is about |
That is the whole discipline. The five checks a firm can run against its own site sit on the technical layer, tested in an afternoon and are not repeated here. What matters for this page is the size of the list: four things, all of them about being found, none of them about being chosen.
Where exactly does SEO stop and marketing start?
At the moment of arrival. Everything before it is search. Everything after it is not.
| The question a firm is really asking | Whose job it is |
|---|---|
| Can a search engine reach and read this page? | Search |
| Does a page exist at all for the question people type? | Search finds the question; the firm decides whether it wants that work |
| Does the page answer the question in the reader's language? | Marketing |
| Does the page say what the work costs? | Marketing, and in England and Wales an expectation as well |
| Is there a named fee earner on it with their qualifications? | Marketing |
| Does anybody answer at half past five on a Friday? | Neither — that is operations |
| Is this the right firm for this matter at all? | Neither — that is the firm's own strategy |
Only two rows belong to search. A supplier selling "SEO marketing" is normally selling those two rows and letting the buyer assume the rest come with them.
What breaks after the ranking arrives?
Four things, and three of them look like search failures without being one.
Traffic rises and enquiries do not. The page ranks for a question the firm does not want the work from. The search work succeeded; the choice of question was wrong.
Enquiries rise and instructions do not. The people arriving cannot afford the firm, usually because nothing on the page indicated what anything costs, so the filtering that a published fee does for free never happened.
Instructions rise and margin falls. The work won is the cheapest work in the practice, because the cheapest work is what the highest-volume search asks for.
Nothing moves at all, and the ranking was never worth much. In Reading, employment solicitor searches run at 10 a month with a click price of £29.11 — the dearest employment click in the twenty UK cities measured on 3 August 2026, on almost no demand. As arithmetic on those two figures, every single click for a year would come to about £3,493. In Glasgow the same practice area runs at 720 searches a month at £8.98. Same work, opposite economics, and a first position means something quite different in each.
Only the fourth is a search problem, and it is one of selection rather than execution.
Why does an AI Overview widen the gap between the two?
Because being the source of an answer and being visited are no longer the same event.
Across the whole measured keyword set, 863 of 1,235 keywords carried an AI Overview on 3 August 2026, and 39 of 54 money searches did. A page can supply the sentence a reader acts on and never receive the click. That pushes work back across the boundary: the marketing half — the price, the named person, the town, the plain statement of what happens first — has to survive being lifted out of the page and read on its own, because increasingly that is the only form in which it gets read.
It also makes the numbers harder to read, which is covered on how to read the numbers three months in.
Which half is a supplier selling you?
Ask three questions, and the proposal answers itself.
- Who writes the words on the page, and are they rewritten or only rearranged? If the answer is that existing copy will be "optimised", the marketing half is not in the price.
- Does the work include the price and service information pages, and who decides which services are in scope? Scope is the firm's decision; the writing is not. A supplier who has no view on either is selling the search half alone.
- If rankings improve and enquiries do not, whose problem is that under this contract? The answer tells you what the supplier believes it sold.
Which of these suppliers separates the two on its own site?
All three named here published a price, which is unusual in a market where 12 of 40 do.
magnifylab.com, marketinglawyers.co.uk and seoprofy.com each had a price on the page when we read all 40 suppliers on 3 August 2026. We record who published a number and never what it was; the values our tooling collected mixed genuine fees with case values, and a wrong figure against a named business is not worth publishing.
A published price is a real advantage and it still does not settle this page's question. A number tells a buyer what will be invoiced. It does not say whether the invoice covers the two search rows above, the five rows after them, or some of each — and five of the twelve who published a figure showed a range rather than a fixed number, which makes the scope question sharper rather than softer.
Which half do we sell, and which do we decline?
The search half, the words on the page, and the price and service pages. Not the rest.
| Product | Price |
|---|---|
| Price Transparency Pack, ten working days | £890 |
| Firm Site | £2,400 |
| Firm Site+ | £4,200 |
| Authority Build | £6,900 |
| Retainer, no minimum term | £600 / £1,200 / £2,400 a month |
Fixed and published, priced by scope and time. Never per enquiry, per case or per client — LASPO 2012 section 56 restricts referral fees in prescribed legal business including personal injury, and it binds the paying firm as well as the party paid.
What we decline: we do not manage ad spend, we do not do naming, identity or print, we do not fix what happens to an enquiry after it arrives, and we do not decide which practice areas a firm should compete for. That last one is the firm's own commercial judgement and we will say so rather than sell it back.
The damaging admission this page exists for: if a firm is the fourth-cheapest of twelve in its town with nothing to distinguish it, better search work makes that more visible rather than less. We can put a firm in front of more people. We cannot make it a firm they choose, and no supplier who tells you otherwise is describing search.
Before you shortlist anyone
We read 40 legal-marketing suppliers in full in August 2026 — including several on this page. Twelve published a price. One offered work with no minimum term.

Where should I read next?
If the question is who to buy from: marketing agency for legal firms argues whether sector specialism is worth its premium, lawyer marketing agency reads the contract clause by clause, and law firm seo agency sets out what evidence to ask for in writing.
If the question is how the engagement is paid for rather than what it contains: law firm digital marketing agency compares a project, a retainer and a payroll line side by side.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SEO and marketing for a law firm?
SEO decides whether the right person can find the page. Marketing decides whether they instruct the firm once they have. Only two of the seven questions a firm is really asking belong to search; the rest are the words, the price, the people, operations and strategy.
Why do rankings improve without enquiries improving?
Usually because the page ranks for a question the firm does not want the work from, or because nothing on the page says what anything costs, so the filtering a published fee performs for free never happens. Neither is a search failure.
Is a first position always worth having?
No. In Reading, employment searches run at 10 a month with a click price of £29.11; in Glasgow the same practice area runs at 720 a month at £8.98. Both figures were measured on 3 August 2026, and a first position means something very different in each.
What does an AI Overview change?
It separates being the source of an answer from being visited. Across the measured set, 863 of 1,235 keywords carried one on 3 August 2026, so the price, the named person and the plain first step have to survive being lifted out of the page and read alone.
How do I tell which half a supplier is selling?
Ask who writes the words and whether they are rewritten or rearranged, whether the price and service pages are in scope and who decides that scope, and whose problem it is under the contract if rankings improve and enquiries do not.
Do you do both halves?
We do the search work, the words on the page, and the price and service pages. We do not manage ad spend, do naming or print, fix intake, or decide which practice areas a firm should compete for.
Can any of this be paid for per enquiry?
No. LASPO 2012 section 56 restricts referral fees in prescribed legal business including personal injury, and it binds the firm paying as much as the party being paid, so a supplier's assurance is not the firm's answer.
