Law firm marketing in Boston: the corporate gap

Boston's measured legal search demand is 9,410 queries a month across eight practice areas, smaller than Indianapolis. Its business attorney click costs $12.02 and its real estate click $3.90, the cheapest in our twenty-city US set. The corporate work Boston is known for is not bought through search.

Why does a large legal economy produce a small search market?

Because the work the city is known for is not searched for.

On 3 August 2026 we measured 110 searches a month for a business attorney in Boston. That is the lowest business figure of the 19 US cities where we hold one. Los Angeles records 1,900 for the same term and Miami 590. Boston's probate volume, 520 a month, is likewise the lowest of the twenty cities we measured.

The reason is structural rather than mysterious. Corporate and institutional instructions arrive through panels, referrals, directories and relationships that already exist. A general counsel changing outside counsel does not open a search engine and type the phrase our dataset counts. So a firm that reads "Boston, large legal market" and buys a search build sized for that reputation has bought against demand that is not there.

The admission that costs us something, and it belongs early: we do not do directory work. No submissions, no ranking applications, nothing to do with how a firm appears in a legal directory. For a Boston corporate practice whose buyers use directories, the most useful thing available may be something we neither sell nor hold any measurement of.

What do Boston's eight practice areas actually cost to reach?

Very unevenly, and the ranking is not the one a partner would guess.

Practice areaSearches/moCost per clickEvery click for a month
Personal injury2,400$74.38$178,512.00
Criminal defense1,000$42.78$42,780.00

Real estate590$3.90$2,301.00
Business110$12.02$1,322.20

Volume and cost per click measured 3 August 2026, Google Ads. The right-hand column is arithmetic — searches multiplied by cost per click — showing what buying every click for one month would cost at Google's own prices. It is not a forecast of anything, and no firm buys a whole market.

Read the two ends. Boston's entire business search market would cost $1,322.20 a month to buy outright. The injury market would cost $178,512.00, which is 135 times as much. The eight rows together come to roughly $310,340 a month.

The family and divorce row deserves a note: the dataset treats family and divorce as one category in the United States, so $19.82 is the blended figure and not a divorce-only price.

Is Boston cheaper than a smaller city?

In the practice area where money is actually at stake, yes — which is the opposite of what most people expect.

Indianapolis records 10,620 legal searches a month against Boston's 9,410, so it is the larger search market of the two. Its injury click costs $138.16. Boston's costs $74.38. The smaller, less celebrated market charges nearly twice as much for the same click.

That is the single most useful thing on this page. Market size, legal-economy prestige and click price move independently of one another, and a supplier who prices a Boston build by reputation has used the wrong variable. Boston is not an expensive market. It is a market with unusually little search demand in exactly the areas its reputation rests on, and ordinary prices in the areas that are actually searched.

Which suppliers on this search publish a price?

One of these four did, which is worse than the market rate.

Of 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, twelve published any price at all, five showed only a "from" range, eight claimed a guarantee of some kind, and one offered work with no minimum term. We recorded only whether a figure was visible on the page, never what it was, and we make no claim about what any of these businesses sells, charges or achieves. Our tooling picked up case values and half-sentences alongside genuine fees, and a wrong number against a named business is not a mistake worth making.

The set above is deliberately mixed, because a Boston corporate practice is not only choosing between agencies. It is choosing between channels, and the channel question comes before the supplier question.

What should a Boston firm build first?

The searched areas, in the order the table gives, and not the areas on the letterhead.

  1. One page per practice area that appears in the table with real volume — injury, criminal defense, family, employment, immigration. These are the rows people actually type.
  2. One page per named fee earner, because named-person searches are the one query type a firm always wins.
  3. The questions asked before instruction — costs, time limits, what happens first. No bidding, in any market, on any of them.
  4. A business or corporate page only if the firm wants it for readers who arrive by another route. At 110 searches a month it will not carry itself on search volume, and we would rather say so before the invoice than after.

For most Boston firms that is eight to twelve pages. It is a worked illustration rather than a measured average, and the point of it is the fourth item.

What does it cost, and what will it not do?

$1,450 for the Practice Sprint, $2,900 for the build. Fixed, published, no minimum term.

Never per inquiry, per case or per matter. We charge for scope and time. Lawyer advertising in the United States runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), which each state has adopted differently, and how it applies to a particular firm is a question for that firm and its own advisers rather than for a marketing supplier.

It will not put a corporate practice in front of buyers who never search. It will not produce matters this quarter. It does nothing for a firm whose constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than inquiries. And we cannot promise a ranking, which nobody can.

Frequently asked questions

How much legal search does Boston actually have?

9,410 queries a month across the eight practice areas we measured on 3 August 2026, which is fewer than Indianapolis at 10,620. It is not a large search market by volume, whatever the size of the legal economy behind it.

Why is the business attorney figure so low?

Boston records 110 business searches a month, the lowest of the 19 US cities we hold, because corporate instructions arrive through panels, referrals, directories and existing relationships rather than through search. A build sized for the city's reputation is sized against demand that is not there.

What is the cheapest click in Boston?

Real estate, at $3.90, which is the cheapest single click anywhere in our twenty-city US dataset. Probate follows at $9.25 and business at $12.02.

Are clicks cheaper in Boston than in a smaller market?

For personal injury, yes. Boston is $74.38 and Indianapolis, a larger search market at 10,620 queries a month, is $138.16. Market size and click price move independently, so neither one predicts the other.

Do you do legal directory work?

No. We do not make submissions or ranking applications and we hold no measurement of what a directory listing produces. For a corporate practice whose buyers use directories, that may be the more useful channel and it is not one we sell.

Is the family figure a divorce figure?

No. The dataset treats family and divorce as a single category in the United States, so Boston's 1,590 searches at $19.82 is a blended figure covering both rather than a divorce-only price.

How many pages does a Boston firm need?

Usually eight to twelve as a worked illustration: one per searched practice area, one per named fee earner, and the questions asked before instruction. A corporate page is worth building for other reasons, but not for its search volume.
