How do I find clients for my law firm?

Start with the people who already chose you once. 4 groups produce the first instructions: clients whose matters closed, inquiries that never instructed, professionals who see your clients before you do, and anyone who has heard your name. Buying attention comes last, and it is the most expensive.

Last updated: 5 August 2026

Where do the first clients come from when you have none?

From four groups, none of which requires a budget or a supplier.

Who they areWhat you already haveWhat they need from youWhen
Clients whose matters closedA file, and a relationship that ended wellA short note saying what you now take onThis week
People who inquired and never instructedA record of the inquiry, if you kept oneOne follow-up naming what has changed sinceThis week
Professionals who meet your clients firstAn existing relationship, usually undernourishedOne sentence on exactly which matters to send youThis month
People who have heard your nameNothing you controlSomething worth finding when they search itThis month

The second row is the one most firms never work. Somebody who contacted you and did not instruct had the problem, found you, and got as far as making contact. They are closer to instructing than any stranger a click could buy, and reaching them costs an email.

What do you actually say to each of them?

Name the work, not the availability. Specificity is the whole difference.

"Do let me know if you need anything" produces nothing, because it asks the other person to do the classifying. "I am taking on commercial lease disputes under $250,000, and I turn the first review around in a week" produces referrals, because the referrer now recognizes the matter when it lands on their desk.

Three things belong in every one of those notes:

  1. The matter type, narrowly. Two or three, not eight.
  2. What happens first, and how long it takes.
  3. How you charge. Of the 62 questions buyers ask on these searches, 15 are price questions, measured 3 August 2026. The referrer is asked that question before you are.

The admission this page owes you: none of this helps if the diary is already full. If the constraint is your own capacity rather than instructions, this work produces declined matters and a waiting list.

What should be done this week, and what can wait?

Four things this week, three this month, and nothing at all this quarter that costs money.

  • This week. Write the two notes above and send them. Search your own firm's name on a signed-out phone and write down what a stranger sees. Claim and complete the map listing if you have not.
  • This month. Write down the question you are asked most often and publish the answer. Tell three referrers precisely what you take. Add a page naming who does the work.
  • This quarter. Judge whether any of it moved, and only then consider paying for attention.

The order is deliberate. Everything in the first two lines is free and finishes. Anything you buy before them sends people to a firm that has not yet decided what it wants to be sent.

What does buying clients cost, and why is it last?

More than the free work, and it stops the day you stop paying.

In San Diego, 2,400 people a month search for an immigration attorney at around $13.49 a click, so a hundred of those clicks is roughly $1,349 — arithmetic on figures measured 3 August 2026, not a forecast. That is a hundred visits, not a hundred instructions, and it buys nothing that remains when the card is declined.

We also do not buy or sell inquiries at a price each, and no firm should agree to. Referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business in a way that binds the paying firm as well as the party being paid, and US lawyer advertising runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently in each state.

Practice Sprint $1,450, build tier $2,900. Fixed, published, no minimum term. Of the 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, 12 published a price at all and 1 offered work with no minimum term.

The short answer is above. If you want your own city's demand and click figures, what is missing from your site, and what 40 suppliers charge, the report is free and takes about two minutes: /legal/us/

Where should I read next?

The market-level version of this question, rather than the personal one: how lawyers attract new clients.

If you want the fuller method: how to market a law firm, and by practice area, mass tort lawyer marketing and i lawyer marketing.

On what happens once somebody does make contact: a new client intake form and the client intake specialist role.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find clients for my new law firm?

Start with four groups who already know you exist: clients whose matters closed, people who inquired and never instructed, professionals who meet your clients first, and anyone who has heard your name. None of them requires a budget.

Who is the easiest person to win back?

Somebody who contacted the firm and did not instruct. They had the problem, found you, and made contact, which puts them closer to instructing than any stranger a click could buy, and reaching them costs an email.

What should I say when I ask for referrals?

Name two or three matter types narrowly, say what happens first and how long it takes, and say how you charge. A general offer of availability asks the referrer to do the classifying, which is why it produces nothing.

How soon should I start paying for clicks?

After a quarter of free work, not before. In San Diego an immigration click cost around $13.49 against 2,400 monthly searches on 3 August 2026, so a hundred clicks is roughly $1,349, and it buys visits that stop the day the spending does.

Can I buy legal inquiries at a price each?

We do not sell them and would advise against buying them. Referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business in a way that binds the paying firm as well as the recipient, and US lawyer advertising runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently by state.

What if I am already busy?

Then do none of it. If the constraint is your capacity rather than instructions, this work produces declined matters and a longer waiting list rather than more revenue.
