What is law firm marketing?

Law firm marketing is the work of being found and believed by somebody who already needs a lawyer. It touches 2 of the 5 steps a client takes — searching, and comparing — and creates no demand of its own. Intake, business development and case software are not it.

What are the five steps, and which two does marketing touch?

The sequence is fixed, and marketing operates in the middle of it.

StepWhat the person doesDoes marketing touch it
1Has a problem they did not chooseNo. Nobody is persuaded into needing a lawyer
2Searches for the problem or for a type of firmYes — whether you appear at all
3Compares three or four firmsYes — whether the page answers them
4Makes contactNo. That is intake
5Instructs, or does notNo. That is the meeting

That narrowness is the useful part of the definition. A supplier who talks about generating demand for legal services is describing something that does not happen: people do not develop a dispute because an advertisement was good. The work is entirely about steps two and three, which is why it is measured in visibility and in whether a page answers a question.

Step three is where most of the value sits and where least attention goes. AI Overviews appeared on 39 of the 54 money searches we measured on 3 August 2026, and on 863 of the 1,235 keywords in the wider set — so the comparison is increasingly done by reading a summary rather than four websites. A page that buries its answer gets summarized without attribution.

What is billed as marketing but is not marketing?

Three things, and confusing them wastes more money than any channel decision.

Intake. Who answers the phone, how long a web inquiry waits, whether there is a script. That is step four, it sits inside the firm, and it decides whether the marketing was worth buying. We do not fix it and neither does any supplier claiming to; the honest version of that claim is software or an answering service.

Business development. A partner's relationships, referrals from other professionals, work that arrives because somebody knows somebody. It is real, it is often the largest source of instructions in a firm, and it is not bought from an agency.

Case management software. Useful, sold to the same buyer by some of the same people, and unrelated to whether anybody finds the firm.

What do the words on a proposal actually mean?

Eight terms, and what each one physically delivers.

Term on the proposalWhat actually arrivesHow it is usually charged
Search engine optimizationPages written, site fixes, linksMonthly, or as a fixed project
Paid searchAds shown, billed each time somebody clicksA fee plus the click spend
Local or map listingsA completed, verified business listingUsually free to do, sometimes a setup fee
ContentArticles, guides, question pagesPer piece or monthly
Website buildA finished site, delivered onceFixed project
BrandingA name, mark and visual systemFixed project
Directory placementA profile where buyers compile shortlistsAnnual membership
Buying inquiriesContact details of people who filled a formPriced by volume, which we do not do

The last row is the one to read twice. Referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business in a way that binds the firm paying as well as the party being paid, and US lawyer advertising runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently in each state.

What does it cost, and why is that hard to find out?

Practice Sprint $1,450, build tier $2,900. Fixed, published, no minimum term.

Of the 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, 12 published a price at all, 5 of those showed only a range, 8 claimed a guarantee of some kind, and 1 offered work with no minimum term. Meanwhile 15 of the 62 questions buyers ask on these searches are price questions. A first-time buyer is not imagining the difficulty: the most-asked question in this market is the one most suppliers decline to answer.

The 8 claiming a guarantee are worth pausing on. Nobody controls the ranking, and we will not promise one either.

What will marketing not do for a law firm?

It will not fill a diary that is already full, and it does not work quickly.

If the constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than instructions, better visibility produces declined work and a longer waiting list. That is worth settling before buying anything. And the cost of visibility is set by the practice area, not by the firm: in Denver, 590 people a month search for a business attorney at around $27.82 a click, so a hundred clicks is roughly $2,782 — arithmetic on figures measured 3 August 2026, not a forecast.

The short answer is above. If you want the demand and click figures for your own city, what is missing from your site, and what 40 suppliers charge, the report is free and takes about two minutes: /legal/us/

Frequently asked questions

What is law firm marketing, in one sentence?

The work of being found and believed by somebody who already needs a lawyer, which touches only the searching and comparing steps and creates no demand of its own.

Does law firm marketing create new clients?

No. It changes which firm an existing searcher finds and chooses. Nobody develops a legal problem because an advertisement was persuasive, which is why the work is measured in visibility rather than in demand.

Is client intake part of marketing?

No. Intake is what happens after the inquiry arrives, it sits inside the firm, and it determines whether the marketing was worth buying. A supplier claiming to fix it is describing software or an answering service.

What does a law firm marketing proposal usually include?

Some combination of pages and site work, paid ads, a map listing, content, a website build, branding, directory placement, or the sale of inquiries by volume. The last is restricted in prescribed legal business and we do not do it.

How much does law firm marketing cost?

Ours is $1,450 for the Practice Sprint and $2,900 for the build tier, fixed and published with no minimum term. Across the market it is hard to find out: of 40 suppliers read in full on 3 August 2026, 12 published a price and 5 of those gave a range.

Should I believe a marketing guarantee?

No. Nobody controls the ranking. Eight of the 40 suppliers we read claim a guarantee of some kind, and we decline to offer one.
