Law firm marketing in Charleston: measure it yourself

We hold no figures for Charleston. Our US dataset covers 156 city and practice-area rows across 20 cities, measured 3 August 2026, and Charleston is in none of them. A firm here has to measure its own demand, and this page sets out the four steps and the error a borrowed number carries.

Do we hold search figures for Charleston?

No. Not one row, in any practice area.

Our demand data covers 52 cities, 20 of them in the United States, measured on 3 August 2026. The twenty are Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego, Seattle and Tampa. Charleston is not among them, and no figure on this page is a Charleston figure.

The admission this page is built on: a supplier who quotes a Charleston search volume or click price without having measured it has invented it. We could invent one too. What follows instead is the size of the mistake that would be, and how a firm gets the real number for itself.

Which Charleston does the search mean?

More than one American city carries the name, which is a practical problem before it is a semantic one.

Any keyword tool will return a number for an unqualified city term, and it will silently combine or pick between places. So the first thing to check about a figure someone hands you is not whether it is large. It is which geography it was pulled for, at what radius, and on what date. A report that does not state all three is not a measurement, it is a screenshot.

This matters more in a market with no published benchmark than in one with several. A Houston partner can sanity-check a number against half a dozen sources. Nobody can do that here, which is exactly why the sourcing details have to be on the page.

How wrong can a nearest-city guess be?

Between 2.8 and 7.7 times, on our own measured figures.

Practice areaUS cities heldCheapest clickDearest clickSpread
Personal injury20Phoenix $53.66Philadelphia $151.312.8x
Criminal defense17Charlotte $20.16Phoenix $86.124.3x
Business19Nashville $8.79Charlotte $39.334.5x
Family and divorce20Indianapolis $15.50Denver $73.274.7x
Real estate20Boston $3.90Denver $30.057.7x

Measured 3 August 2026, Google Ads cost per click. The spread column is arithmetic on the two prices beside it. The dataset treats family and divorce as one category in the United States, so that row covers both.

Now put a number on the risk. A firm that assumes the cheapest measured injury click and meets the dearest one pays $15,131 for a hundred clicks where it budgeted $5,366 — a gap of $9,765 on arithmetic, in one month, on one practice area. Neither figure is a Charleston figure, and the real one could sit outside both. The point of the table is the width of the range, not any value in it.

The same table also settles a question firms ask in the other direction. Charlotte holds the cheapest criminal click of the seventeen cities we measured and the dearest business click of the nineteen. One city, opposite ends of two practice areas. There is no such thing as a cheap market or an expensive market — only a cheap or expensive practice area inside a market.

How does a firm measure its own market?

Four steps, none of which needs an agency, and all of which take under an afternoon.

  1. Read your own Search Console first. It lists the queries the firm already appears for, with impressions and average position, for the site as it stands. It is the only free data source that is genuinely about this firm rather than about a market.
  2. Run Keyword Planner inside your own Google Ads account, targeted at your county rather than the state, with the practice-area terms your intake actually records. Write down the geography and the date beside every number.
  3. Buy a small, short, capped campaign for two weeks on the three terms that matter most, and read what you actually paid. A planner estimate is a range; a settled auction is a price. This is the only step that costs money and it is the only one that produces a real number.
  4. Count the competitors who would actually show up — the ones with an office in the county and a named person on the page. A directory result is not a competitor for an instruction.

Then date the file. Prices and volumes move, and a figure with no date attached becomes folklore in about six months.

Which suppliers on this search publish a price?

One of these three did, against a market rate of twelve in forty.

Of 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, twelve published any price, five showed only a "from" range, eight claimed a guarantee of some kind, and one offered work with no minimum term. We recorded only whether a figure was visible, never what it was, and we make no claim about what any of these businesses sells, charges or achieves.

The question to ask any of them, including us: where did your Charleston number come from, which geography was it pulled for, and on what date. A supplier who can answer all three has measured something. A supplier who cannot has borrowed a figure from a city that is not this one.

What does it cost, and what will it not do?

$1,450 for the Practice Sprint, $2,900 for the build. Fixed, published, no minimum term.

Never per inquiry, per case or per matter. We charge for scope and time. Lawyer advertising in the United States runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently by each state, and how it applies to a particular firm is a question for that firm and its own advisers.

It will not tell you what a Charleston click costs, because we have not measured it and will not pretend to have. It will not produce matters this quarter. And it does nothing for a firm whose constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than inquiries.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have search data for Charleston?

No. Our dataset holds 156 city and practice-area rows across 20 US cities measured on 3 August 2026, and Charleston is not one of them. We publish no estimate for it, and no figure on this page is a Charleston figure.

Can you use the nearest city instead?

Not safely. Across our twenty US cities the same practice area varies between 2.8 and 7.7 times in cost per click, so a borrowed figure carries an error wide enough to change every decision made on it.

What is the largest spread you measured?

Real estate, where the cheapest click is $3.90 in Boston and the dearest is $30.05 in Denver, a factor of 7.7 on arithmetic. Criminal defense runs 4.3 times and personal injury 2.8 times.

Is a small market a cheap market?

No. Charlotte holds the cheapest criminal defense click of the seventeen cities we measured and the dearest business click of the nineteen, which means the useful unit is the practice area inside a market rather than the market itself.

How does a firm measure its own demand?

Read Search Console for the queries it already appears for, run Keyword Planner in its own account targeted at the county, buy a small capped two-week campaign to see the real settled price, and count the competitors with a real office and a named person.

Why does the city name matter to a keyword report?

More than one American city is called Charleston, and a tool will combine or choose between them without saying so. Any figure handed to a firm should state which geography it was pulled for, at what radius, and on what date.

What should I ask a supplier who quotes me a Charleston number?

Where it came from, which geography it was pulled for, and on what date. All three answers together are a measurement, and any missing one means the number was borrowed from somewhere else.
