Law firm marketing in Los Angeles: choose a submarket

Los Angeles is not one legal market. Google Ads records 40,200 legal searches a month across the city, and 18,100 of them are personal injury. Competing citywide means competing in that auction whether or not the firm takes injury work. Concentrating on one practice area and the areas a firm genuinely serves is cheaper and more winnable.

Why is competing citywide the expensive mistake?

Because the citywide terms are priced by the practice area with the deepest pockets, and that is injury.

Across the eight practice areas we measured in Los Angeles on 3 August 2026, personal injury accounts for 18,100 of the city's 40,200 monthly legal searches — 45% of the volume by our own arithmetic — and carries the highest click price of the eight at $81.10. The cheapest of the eight is immigration at $14.71. The gap is 5.5 times.

That matters to a firm that does no injury work at all, because generic citywide phrasing puts it alongside advertisers who have decided a click is worth $81.10. Arithmetic, not a forecast: buying every Los Angeles injury click for one month at that listed price would cost $1,467,910, against $820,147 for the other seven practice areas combined. Roughly two thirds of what this city's legal search would cost to buy sits inside one practice area.

A probate firm does not have to enter that room. It has 1,600 searches a month at $20.56 to work with, and almost nobody writing seriously for them.

What does demand in this city actually look like?

Eight practice areas, measured the same way, with very different economics.

Measured 3 August 2026, Google Ads monthly volume and cost-per-click, across twenty US cities. This is what the traffic would cost to buy at Google's own prices. It is not revenue and not matters won.

Read down the two right-hand columns and the strategy writes itself. Employment and criminal defense sit at $55.81 and $58.18 with the same 4,400 searches each — two markets of identical size where the bidding is nearly as heavy as injury. Immigration has more searches than business, real estate or probate, at the lowest price of the eight.

How far will a Los Angeles client actually travel?

Further than a Manhattan client and much less far than the phrase "Los Angeles" implies.

We hold no travel or journey data. Our dataset prices searches, not distances, and we will not publish a drive-time figure we have not measured. What can be said without one is structural: a matter that needs several in-person meetings is chosen partly on the drive, and a firm whose only geographic signal is the city name has given the reader nothing to weigh.

The county contains Santa Monica, Glendale, Long Beach, downtown and the San Fernando Valley, and a person in one of them is not choosing between all the firms in the others. A named office address, on a page that reads as though it was written by somebody who works there, is a stronger signal than a citywide claim — and it is the signal a national supplier cannot manufacture.

Does language divide the market as well?

Yes, and this is where our own data stops being useful.

Every search term in our dataset is English. The measured top terms above are English-language phrases, so the figures on this page describe English-language demand in Los Angeles and nothing else. We hold no Spanish, Korean, Armenian, Mandarin or Farsi search volume for this city, and we are not going to estimate one.

That is a real limitation and it cuts against us. For a firm with a bilingual fee earner serving a community that searches in its own language, every number on this page understates the opportunity, possibly by a lot. We would rather say so than sell a projection. What we can say is that the pages serving those searches are usually not written, and a firm that writes them is competing against far less than it faces in English.

Which suppliers can you compare before you call one?

Only the ones who published a figure, which on our reading was a minority.

We read each of these in full on 3 August 2026 and recorded one thing: whether a price was visible on the page. We do not describe what any of them sells or how well they do it, because we did not measure that. The figures our tooling scraped from these pages mixed genuine fees with case values, so no fee is attributed to anyone here or anywhere else on this site.

And a plain admission, since the price argument is ours to lose: publishing a price is a transparency signal, not a quality measure. Any of the three above who did not publish one may be the better supplier for a given firm, and a buyer who forms a shortlist purely on who shows a number is using a filter we happen to pass.

Three situations where we are the wrong choice regardless of the shortlist. If the firm's constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than inquiries, more visibility makes the problem worse. If it needs matters this quarter, that is paid search, and we do not manage ad spend. And if the site is dated rather than invisible, the job is design, which other people do better and care more about.

How many pages does concentration actually mean?

Fewer than a volume supplier will propose, and never one per neighborhood.

The pattern to refuse is a page per district with the practice area swapped in — Santa Monica personal injury, Glendale personal injury, Pasadena personal injury, on down the list. Those pages are near-identical by construction, which is the doorway pattern, and Google removed roughly 80% of doorway pages in measured 2024 core-update cases. The pages usually go together.

What replaces it:

  • One page per practice area the firm wants more of. Two or three, not eight.
  • One page per office that physically exists, with the address and the people in it.
  • One page per named fee earner, with the work they actually do.
  • One page per question asked before instruction — what happens first, what it costs, how long it takes.
  • A page in a second language where a fee earner can genuinely conduct the matter in it.

That is eight to twelve pages for most firms. We apply the same rule to ourselves: this page carries a note at the top naming what it gives that its siblings do not, because a set of near-identical pages is a demotion risk for the whole set rather than the weakest page in it.

What does it cost, and how do you charge?

$1,450 for the Practice Sprint, $2,900 for the build. Fixed, published, no minimum term.

Never per inquiry, per case or per matter. We charge for the work, by scope and time. Lawyer advertising in the United States runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), which each state has adopted differently, and what that means for a particular firm is a question for the firm and its own advisers rather than for us.

Of 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, twelve published a price at all, five showed only a "from" range, eight claimed a guarantee of some kind, and one offered work with no minimum term. We cannot promise a ranking and neither can anyone else.

Frequently asked questions

Is Los Angeles one legal market?

No. It is a county-sized set of submarkets separated by distance, language and practice area, and the citywide search terms are priced by whichever practice area bids hardest, which here is personal injury at $81.10 a click.

How much of Los Angeles legal search is personal injury?

18,100 of the city's 40,200 monthly legal searches, or 45% by our arithmetic, measured 3 August 2026. By the same arithmetic that single practice area is about two thirds of what the city's legal clicks would cost to buy.

Which Los Angeles practice area is cheapest to reach?

Immigration, at $14.71 a click against injury's $81.10, with 2,900 searches a month. Probate and estates and real estate are the smallest by volume at 1,600 searches each, at $20.56 and $22.79.

Should a firm build a page for every neighborhood?

No. A page per district with the practice area swapped in is the doorway pattern, and Google removed roughly 80% of doorway pages in measured 2024 core-update cases. Build one page per practice area, per real office and per fee earner instead.

Do your figures cover Spanish-language search in Los Angeles?

No. Every term in our dataset is English, so the numbers on this page understate any firm serving a community that searches in another language, and we do not publish an estimate for what we have not measured.

When is another supplier the better choice here?

When the firm's constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than inquiries, when it needs matters this quarter and therefore needs paid search, and when the site is dated rather than invisible, which is a design job other people do better.

What does it cost and can you charge per case?

$1,450 for the Practice Sprint and $2,900 for the build, fixed and published, with no minimum term. We never charge per inquiry, per case or per matter — we charge for the work, by scope and time.
