Law firm SEO in NYC, the largest market we measured
New York City carries the largest legal search market of the twenty US cities we measured: 54,190 searches a month across eight practice areas on 3 August 2026. It leads on volume in four of those eight and on click price in none, which is the shape that rewards written pages over bought clicks.

What does organic work in New York actually consist of?
Writing documents, one question at a time, and almost nothing else.
The unit of work is a page that answers a single question completely: the question in the words a client would use, the answer in the firm's own words rather than a directory's, the named fee earner who does that work, and what happens in the first week of a matter. Nothing in that list changes because the address is Manhattan. The writing is the same writing it would be in Columbus.
Month one is a build month, and there is nothing to report at the end of it. That is the part worth knowing before a fee is agreed, because it is the month in which a firm most wants a number and there is none to give. We also do not manage ad spend and do not fix intake. A firm already losing inquiries at the phone will lose them faster with more traffic, and in that situation this is the wrong purchase in any city.
Where does New York lead the dataset, and where does it not?
First by volume in four of eight practice areas. First by click price in none of them.
| Practice area | Searches/mo | Rank by volume | Click price | Rank by price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Family and divorce | 14,700 | 1st of 20 | $30.41 | 12th of 20 |
| Probate and estates | 7,300 | 1st of 20 | $19.25 | 10th of 20 |
| Employment | 6,600 | 1st of 20 | $27.85 | 4th of 20 |
| Real estate | 2,900 | 1st of 20 | $8.82 | 15th of 20 |
| Personal injury | 14,800 | 3rd of 20 | $73.14 | 16th of 20 |
| Criminal defense | 4,400 | joint 2nd of 17 | $49.31 | 11th of 17 |
| Immigration | 2,900 | joint 4th of 20 | $15.21 | 6th of 20 |
| Business | 590 | joint 2nd of 19 | $23.45 | 12th of 19 |
Volumes and click prices measured 3 August 2026. The two rank columns are an ordering of the published rows rather than a separate measurement — we sorted the cities we hold and read off New York's position, and where cities tie the rank is shown as joint. Criminal defense appears for 17 of the cities in the dataset and business for 19, so those two rows are ranked against a smaller field and say so.
Read the columns against each other. New York is among the top three by volume in seven of the eight practice areas, and its best national placing on price — employment, fourth of twenty at $27.85 — is the only one inside the top five. The city that is famous for costing more than everywhere else is, in this market, large and mid-priced.
Why is the same page worth more here than elsewhere?
Because the writing is a fixed cost and the audience is not.
A page answering the same family-law question sits in front of 14,700 searches a month in New York and 1,590 in Boston, both measured 3 August 2026. That is 9.2 times the audience for one document, which is division on two measured volumes and not a forecast of traffic. The employment comparison runs the same way: 6,600 here against 1,300 in Columbus, roughly five times, for a page that takes the same week to research and write. The dataset treats family and divorce as one category, so that row covers both rather than divorce alone.
What it does not mean is 9.2 times the instructions. We hold search volumes and click prices. We hold nothing on how many searches become inquiries, how many inquiries become matters, or what a matter is worth, and no page of ours will convert one into the other.
How many separate documents does eight practice areas actually mean?
More than most firms expect, and we will not put a number on it before seeing a site.
One page cannot serve eight practice areas. The query that brings somebody to a page is the query the page has to answer, and a document covering everything answers nothing in particular — that is the working rule we build to, stated as a rule rather than as something we measured. So the count follows the firm: a page for each practice area it genuinely takes, a page for each question inside it that clients keep asking, a page for each named fee earner, and the entry page that holds them together.
Two things push the count up in a market this size. The first is that seven of the eight areas here are top-three markets nationally, so a firm with three departments has three full page sets rather than one with three sections. The second is the answer format: 863 of the 1,235 keywords we measured on 3 August 2026 carry an AI Overview, and 39 of 54 money searches do. A page that buries its answer under three paragraphs of preamble gets summarized without attribution, and the click never happens.
What does the first ninety days look like?
A build, then indexing, then movement or nothing — and we cannot tell you in advance which.
The honest version is short. Pages get written and published in the first stretch, search engines take their own time to crawl and rank them, and the first signal that anything is working arrives as impressions rising while clicks stay flat. We cannot promise a ranking, a position or a number of clients, and neither can anybody else. Eight of the 40 suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026 claimed a guarantee of some kind. Nobody controls the auction or the algorithm, and a guarantee in this market is a sales instrument rather than a commitment anyone can keep.
Which suppliers on a New York shortlist publish a price?
Four we read in full, and the single field we recorded about each.
| Supplier | Published a price, 3 Aug 2026 |
|---|---|
| digitalagencynetwork.com | Yes |
| idr.legal | Yes |
| lawue.com | No |
| rep-ink.com | No |
Of 40 legal-marketing suppliers read in full on 3 August 2026, 12 published a price at all, 5 showed only a "from" range, 8 claimed a guarantee, and 1 offered work with no minimum term. We recorded whether a figure was visible and nothing else. We will not say what any of them charges — our tooling picked up case values and fragments alongside genuine fees, and a wrong number attributed to a named business is not worth publishing. Nothing here describes their work, their staffing or their results, none of which we examined.
Where one of them is the better call: a firm that needs matters this quarter needs somebody buying clicks daily and watching the account, and that is not us. On a New York injury search at $73.14 a click that is a real budget being spent by a real person, and a supplier who does that work is worth more to such a firm than any amount of writing.
What does this cost, and why never per inquiry?
$1,450 for the Practice Sprint and $2,900 for the build. Fixed, published, no minimum term.
The prices are the same here as anywhere, because a New York build is the same work as any other build. We never charge per inquiry, per case or per matter. We charge for the work by scope and time. Lawyer advertising in the United States runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), which each state has adopted differently, and how it bears on a particular firm is a question for that firm and its own advisers rather than for a marketing supplier.
One of the 40 suppliers we read on 3 August 2026 stated that its work carried no minimum term. Before comparing any monthly figure with ours, multiply it by the term it is attached to.
