Lawyer internet marketing: five channels, in the right order

There are 5 online channels available to a law firm and they have a required order. Running them in the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in this market — it means paying for visits to a page that cannot answer the question that produced them.

Last updated: 4 August 2026

What are the five online channels?

Listed in the order they should be started, which is not the order they are usually sold.

1The firm's own pagesNothing. This is the foundationImmediate, once built
2Local and map listingsThe pages exist to link toDays

Channel four is where most firms start, because it is the only one that produces something in week one. It also has the highest cost of being early: every click lands on whatever the site currently says, and if that does not answer the fee question, the money is gone.

Why does the order matter so much financially?

Because the first three channels are paid for once and the fourth is paid for every time.

In Philadelphia, a personal injury click costs around $151.31, measured 3 August 2026. A firm running paid search to a page that does not state fees, name a person or offer a contact route other than a phone call is buying visits it cannot convert. A hundred of them is roughly $15,131.

Fixing the page first does not make the clicks cheaper. It makes them worth buying.

The same logic applies to organic, except the cost was paid months earlier in build and content rather than per visit. Either way the visit was bought. The page decides whether the purchase returned anything.

What has to be on the pages before any traffic is worth buying?

Four things. They are content decisions, not design decisions, and all four are commonly missing.

  1. A fee answer, even a range with the variables named. 15 of the 62 questions buyers ask on these searches are price questions — measured across 40 suppliers on 3 August 2026 — and the same pattern holds for the firm's own prospective clients.
  2. A named person with a photograph, rather than an experienced team.
  3. A contact route that is not a telephone call. Many people with a legal problem will not ring a stranger about it on first contact.
  4. Evidence of comparable prior work, at whatever level confidentiality permits.

A firm that fixes those four and changes nothing else usually sees the existing traffic convert better before any new channel is started.

Which channels are actually free?

Two of the five, and both are routinely left half-finished.

The map and directory listings cost nothing to claim and complete. Categories, services listed individually, hours, and a description in the words clients use. Most firms complete perhaps a third of the fields. It is an hour of work.

The firm's own pages cost build time once and nothing thereafter. They are the only asset in this list that the firm owns outright and can take anywhere.

The three that cost money on an ongoing basis are paid search, paid social, and directory memberships. None of them is worth starting before the two free ones are finished, because all three point at the same pages.

When is paid search the right first move anyway?

When the firm needs instructions this quarter, which is a real situation and not a failure of planning.

Organic produces nothing measurable in month one and cannot be judged fairly before month six. A firm with a cash-flow problem now cannot wait for that, and telling it to would be advice that suits us rather than the firm.

The honest sequence in that case: fix the four page items above in a fortnight, then run paid. That is a two-week delay, not a six-month one, and it is the difference between buying visits that convert and buying visits that bounce.

We do not manage ad spend. Law firm PPC marketing covers choosing somebody who does.

What does the work cost?

Practice Sprint $1,450, build tier $2,900. Both fixed, both published, no minimum term.

Published only a "from" range5 / 4013%
Claimed a guarantee8 / 4020%

A damaging admission: none of this helps a firm whose constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than inquiries. Better visibility then produces declined work and a longer waiting list. That question should be settled before any channel is started.

What this is worth where you are

In Philadelphia, 6,600 people a month search for personal injury, and Google charges around $151.31 for one of those clicks. We hold the same figures for 52 cities.

Where should I read next?

Single channels in depth: lawyer content marketing, lawyer email marketing — the one channel that reaches people who already know the firm — and lawyer marketing video.

By practice area, where the sequencing changes: employment lawyer marketing and divorce lawyer marketing, both of which involve longer decisions than injury work and reward the content channels more.

Frequently asked questions

What order should a law firm start online marketing channels in?

Own pages first, then local and map listings, then organic search, then paid search, then social and directories. Most firms start with paid because it produces something in week one, which is also where being early costs most.

Why does running the channels out of order cost money?

Because paid clicks land on whatever the site currently says. A Philadelphia personal injury click cost around $151.31 on 3 August 2026, so a hundred visits to a page that does not answer the fee question is roughly $15,131 spent on traffic that cannot convert.

What has to be on the pages before buying traffic?

A fee answer even as a range, a named person with a photograph, a contact route that is not a telephone call, and evidence of comparable prior work. All four are content decisions and all four are commonly missing.

Which online channels are free?

The map and directory listings, which cost nothing to claim and complete, and the firm's own pages, which cost build time once. Most firms complete about a third of the available listing fields, and finishing them is roughly an hour of work.

When should a firm start with paid search instead?

When it needs instructions this quarter. Organic produces nothing measurable in month one and cannot be judged before month six. Fix the four page items in a fortnight first, then run paid; that is a two-week delay rather than a six-month one.

Do you run paid campaigns?

No. We build the pages and do the organic work on fixed fees, with no minimum term. Our PPC comparison page covers how to choose a supplier who does manage ad spend, including which fee model to accept.

Does any of this help a firm that is already at capacity?

No. If the constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than inquiries, better visibility produces declined work and a longer waiting list. That should be settled before any channel is started.
