Marketing a law firm: five strategies, and how to choose
Pick 1 strategy and finish it. Every strategy has a minimum dose below which it returns nothing, so a firm running 5 at a fifth of the required effort gets 5 nothings. Choose from what the firm already has: an asset, a relationship, or a name.

What are the best marketing strategies for a law firm?
There are five that work, and the best one is whichever the firm can finish.
| Strategy | What it runs on | The finish line | Where it stalls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answer the questions | An existing site that at least loads and can take new pages | Every question asked before instruction has a page | Half-written pages nobody links to |
| Work the referrals | Relationships the firm already has | A written route: who refers, what they get back, how often | Lunches with no record and no repeat |
| Build a named lawyer | One fee earner with a public reputation to extend | That person's name returns them, their work, and a way to contact them | The partner who agreed to it has no time |
| Buy the clicks | Money and impatience | A test large enough to judge, run and read within six weeks | Nobody is watching the inquiries that arrive |
| Collect the proof | Closed matters and clients willing to be quoted | A steady request at the end of every matter, and replies to what arrives | Somebody asks once, in a burst, then stops |
The five are not alternatives to each other in the way marketing plans imply. They run on different fuel. A firm with no site cannot do the first. A firm with no referrers cannot do the second. A firm with no money cannot do the fourth. The list narrows itself faster than most firms expect once you ask what each one runs on.
The damaging admission: we sell one of these five. The other four we either cannot run for you or should not be paid to run. That is worth knowing before reading any recommendation on this page.
Why do firms fail by running five at once?
Because a strategy at a fifth of its effort produces a fifth of nothing.
The failure is not lack of effort. It is that each of the five has a threshold below which output is not proportionally smaller — it is zero. Eight half-finished practice-area pages rank for nothing. A referral program mentioned once at a partners' meeting produces no referrals. A campaign paused after nine days answers no question. In each case the money and the hours were genuinely spent.
Two measured facts make this worse in 2026 than it used to be. Across the whole keyword set we measured on 3 August 2026, 863 of 1,235 keywords carried an AI Overview — 70%. A thin page that restates what everybody already published gets summarized into that answer without a click. Partial work used to earn partial traffic. Increasingly it earns none, because the summary satisfies the reader on the results page.
The second is scale. In Charlotte, 5,800 people a month search for a family or divorce lawyer at $19.36 a click; in Phoenix, 8,100 search for criminal defense at $86.12. Measured 3 August 2026 across 20 US cities. Those are real audiences reachable by a firm that finishes something, and entirely unreachable by a firm that starts five things.
How do you pick one from what the firm already has?
Look at what you own, not at what you want.
| If the firm already has… | Pick | Why this one |
|---|---|---|
| A site that already ranks for something | Answer the questions | The hard part is done; you are extending a working asset rather than starting one |
| A steady flow of referrals nobody records | Work the referrals | The relationships exist; the failure is that they are informal and unrepeated |
| One fee earner people already ask for by name | Build a named lawyer | Reputation that already exists is cheaper to extend than reputation created from nothing |
| Money, and a need for matters this quarter | Buy the clicks | It is the only one of the five that can answer a question inside a quarter |
| Many closed matters and almost no public proof | Collect the proof | The material exists and is being thrown away at the end of every matter |
| None of the above, and an eight-year-old site | Fix the site first | It is not one of the five; it is the precondition for two of them |
The last row is the one firms argue with. A slow, thin site is not a strategy problem. It is the floor underneath two of the five strategies, and choosing a strategy before the floor exists means choosing something that cannot be finished.
What does finishing one actually look like?
A date, an artifact, and somebody who can say it is done.
Finishing is not a feeling. Each strategy has an artifact that either exists or does not:
- Answer the questions — a list of the questions clients ask before instructing, and a page for each. When the list is empty, the strategy is finished and moves to maintenance.
- Work the referrals — a written list of named referrers, what each one receives, and a recurring date in somebody's calendar. Not a relationship; a routine.
- Build a named lawyer — one person's page, their published work, and their name returning them rather than a directory listing.
- Buy the clicks — a test with a start date, an end date, and a written decision at the end. We do not manage ad spend, so this one goes elsewhere and should.
- Collect the proof — a request that fires at the end of every matter without anyone remembering to send it.
Three to four months before movement on the first, six to nine before it can be judged fairly. Month one produces nothing measurable, which is the honest shape and the reason a firm that abandons in month three abandons at the point the work is starting to hold.
When is the answer none of them?
When the firm is already full, or when nobody answers the phone.
Two situations where all five strategies are the wrong purchase:
- Fee-earner capacity is the constraint. A strategy that works produces more inquiries, which a full firm cannot serve. The correct spend is a hire. This page does nothing for that firm and neither does anything we sell.
- Inquiries are not being answered. If a web inquiry sits until Monday, every strategy above pours water into a bucket with a hole in it. Fixing that is operational, sits inside the firm, and is not marketing. We do not fix it either.
Both are worth checking before choosing anything, because both are cheaper to fix than any of the five and both invalidate the lot.
What does it cost to have one of them run for you?
Practice Sprint $1,450, build tier $2,900. Fixed, published, no minimum term.
That covers the site and the first strategy, and nothing else on the list. Of the 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, twelve published a price at all, five showed only a "from" figure, eight claimed a guarantee of some kind, and one offered work with no minimum term.
We never charge per inquiry, per case or per matter. US lawyer advertising runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently in each state, and pricing tied to volume introduces an incentive we do not want.
What this is worth where you are
In Charlotte, 5,800 people a month search for a family or divorce lawyer, and Google charges around $19.36 for one of those clicks. We hold the same figures for 52 cities.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best marketing strategies for a law firm?
Five work: answering the questions clients ask, working existing referrals, building one named lawyer, buying clicks, and collecting proof from closed matters. The best is whichever the firm can actually finish.
Why should a firm pick one strategy instead of several?
Each strategy has a threshold below which output is zero rather than merely smaller. Eight half-finished pages rank for nothing and a campaign paused after nine days answers nothing, so five efforts at a fifth of the required work finish none of them.
How do you choose which strategy to run?
From what the firm already owns. A site that already ranks points to answering questions; unrecorded referrals point to a referral routine; a fee earner people ask for by name points to building that name; closed matters with no public proof point to collecting it.
What if the firm has none of those?
Fix the site first. It is not one of the five strategies; it is the precondition for two of them, and choosing a strategy before the floor exists means choosing something that cannot be finished.
What does finishing a strategy look like?
An artifact that either exists or does not: a page for every pre-instruction question, a written list of named referrers with a recurring date, one lawyer's name returning their own work, a test with a written decision, or a review request that fires without being remembered.
When is no strategy the right answer?
When fee-earner capacity is the real constraint, or when inquiries are not being answered. A firm already full needs a hire, and a firm whose web inquiries sit until Monday is pouring water into a bucket with a hole in it.
What does it cost to have one run for you?
Practice Sprint $1,450 and build tier $2,900, fixed and published, with no minimum term. That covers the site and one of the five strategies; we do not manage ad spend and do not run the other four.
