Marketing the law firm: seven channels, in order

There are 7 channels available to a law firm, and 2 of them cost nothing but attention. Most firms begin with the most expensive one because somebody sold it to them. Our Practice Sprint is $1,450 and the build tier is $2,900, both fixed, with no minimum term.

What are the seven channels?

All of them, in the order they should be done rather than the order they get pitched.

#ChannelCostWhat it is actually for
1Referral relationshipsFreeThe instructions you already half-have
2Existing client listFreeRepeat matters and referrals from people who already trust you
3The firm's own websiteBuild cost, onceAnswering the questions asked before anyone calls
4Organic searchBuild cost, then compoundingBeing found by people already looking
5Local and map resultsFree to set upProximity-driven searches, which behave differently
6Paid searchPer clickImmediate demand, stops when you stop
7Directories and listingsMembershipPresence where buyers compile shortlists

The first two are free and almost always underworked. A firm with 400 closed matters has 400 people who already chose it once, and most firms contact none of them. That is not a marketing budget problem.

Channel six is where most firms start. It works, it is the fastest, and it is the only one on this list that stops producing the day the card is declined.

How much should a law firm spend on marketing?

Less than the question implies, and the useful version is what a search costs rather than what a budget should be.

In Los Angeles, 18,100 people a month search for personal injury representation and Google charges around $81.10 for one of those clicks, measured 3 August 2026. Buying a hundred of those clicks is roughly $8,110, and a hundred clicks is not a hundred instructions.

That number is the reason the ordering above matters. The paid channel is priced by an auction that does not care about your budget; the free channels are priced by whether anybody in the firm has the time.

A damaging admission: none of this helps a firm whose constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than instructions. If the diary is full, better marketing produces declined work and a longer waiting list. Settle that question before spending anything.

What is law firm marketing, in plain terms?

Making it easy for somebody who already needs a lawyer to find yours and believe it is the right one.

That is a narrower job than it sounds. Almost nobody is persuaded into needing legal advice. They have a problem, they search, they compare three or four firms, and they contact one. Marketing operates on the middle two steps only.

Which is why the questions that decide it are unglamorous: does the firm appear, does the page answer the question, does it say what things cost, is there a way to get in touch that does not require a phone call at 4pm on a Tuesday.

Which channel should a firm start with?

The website, because every other channel points at it.

Paid search sends traffic to a page. Directory listings link to a page. Referrals check the page before calling. A firm that buys clicks before fixing the page is paying to send people somewhere that does not answer them.

The order that works:

  1. Fix the site so the questions get answered and the pages load.
  2. Claim and complete the local listings. Free, and it is the channel closest to a buying decision.
  3. Work the free channels — past clients, referral sources.
  4. Build the organic pages for the searches worth having.
  5. Then buy clicks, if the capacity exists to service them.

Most firms run that list backwards.

What do the suppliers in this market actually offer?

Rarely a price, which is the finding that shaped how we sell.

We read 40 legal-marketing suppliers in full on 3 August 2026. Twelve published a price at all, five of those published only a "from" figure, eight claimed a guarantee, and one offered work with no minimum term.

Across 40 suppliersCount
Published any price12
Published only a range5
Claimed a guarantee8
No minimum term1

15 of the 62 questions buyers ask on these searches are price questions. The most-asked question in this market is the one almost nobody answers, and a partner comparing three proposals is usually comparing three undisclosed numbers.

Eight claiming a guarantee is the figure worth pausing on. Nobody controls the ranking. A guarantee in this market means either a promise about search terms nobody uses, or a refund clause the firm will never successfully invoke.

How do you charge, and why not per lead?

Fixed fees by scope and time. Never per inquiry, never per matter.

Referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business, and the restriction binds the firm paying as well as the party being paid. In the United States, lawyer advertising runs through ABA Model Rule 7.2(b), adopted differently in every state, so an arrangement that is unremarkable in one place can be a problem in the next.

Our Practice Sprint is $1,450 and the build tier is $2,900. Both are published, both are fixed, and there is no minimum term.

Where should I read next?

Single channels in depth: lawyer internet marketing and digital marketing lawyer cover the online side more narrowly than this page does.

By practice area, where the economics differ sharply: injury lawyer marketing and marketing for personal injury lawyer cover the most expensive clicks in the data, and criminal lawyer marketing covers a practice area where the search happens at three in the morning and the decision is made in an hour.

Frequently asked questions

What is law firm marketing?

Making it easy for somebody who already needs a lawyer to find your firm and believe it is the right choice. Almost nobody is persuaded into needing legal advice, so the work operates on being found and being believed, not on creating demand.

How much should a law firm spend on marketing?

The useful figure is what a search costs rather than what a budget should be. In Los Angeles a personal injury click costs around $81.10 and 18,100 people search monthly, measured 3 August 2026. A hundred clicks is roughly $8,110 and is not a hundred instructions.

Which marketing channel should a law firm start with?

The website, because every other channel points at it. Paid clicks, directory listings and referrals all send people to a page, so a firm that buys traffic before fixing the page is paying to send people somewhere that does not answer them.

Which law firm marketing channels are free?

Referral relationships and the existing client list. A firm with 400 closed matters has 400 people who already chose it once, and most firms contact none of them. Local listings are also free to claim and sit close to the buying decision.

Do marketing suppliers publish their prices?

Mostly not. Of 40 suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, twelve published any price and five of those gave only a range. Meanwhile 15 of the 62 questions buyers ask on these searches are about cost.

Should a law firm trust a ranking guarantee?

No. Nobody controls the ranking. Eight of the 40 suppliers we read claim a guarantee, which in practice means either a promise about search terms nobody uses or a refund clause that is difficult to invoke.

Does marketing help a firm that is already busy?

No, and this is worth settling first. If the constraint is fee-earner capacity rather than instructions, better marketing produces declined work and a longer waiting list rather than more revenue.
