Website design for law firms, built around what you publish
A firm's website in England and Wales is not only a marketing asset. The SRA Transparency Rules, in force since 6 December 2018, require price and service information to be published for specified work types. Our Firm Site is £2,400 and the Price Transparency Pack is £890.
Last updated: 4 August 2026
What do the transparency rules actually ask for?
Price and service information, published, for the work types the rules specify. Checked 3 August 2026.
The rules apply to particular categories of work rather than to everything a firm does, and the requirement is publication rather than a particular format. In practice the items a firm is expected to make available include the basis of charges, the likely disbursements, indicative timescales, the qualifications and experience of those doing the work, and information about complaints.
We build the pages those items live on. We do not tell a firm whether it is compliant — that judgement belongs to the firm and its COLP, and any supplier claiming otherwise is offering something it is not in a position to give.
What we can say is what is missing from a site as it stands, which is a factual observation rather than an assessment.
Why do most firm websites fail the fee question?
Because publishing a number feels like surrendering a negotiating position, and the rule was read as an obligation rather than an advantage.
The evidence says the opposite. 15 of the 62 questions buyers ask on these searches are price questions, measured across the 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read on 3 August 2026, and only 12 of those 40 publish a price themselves. The most-asked question in this market is the one almost nobody answers.
A firm that answers it plainly is doing two things at once: meeting the publication expectation, and appearing on the search where the question is asked. Those used to be separate projects.
What pages does a firm receive?
Named, at handover, rather than "a website".
| Page | Count | Why it exists |
|---|---|---|
| Home | 1 | Orientation |
| Practice area | One per area wanted | The searches that produce instructions |
| Price and service information | One per specified work type | The publication requirement |
| Complaints information | 1 | Expected to be available |
| People | One per fee earner | Qualifications and experience |
| Location | One per office | Only where the firm operates |
| Contact | 1 | Not only a telephone number |
A firm with two specified work types and three fee earners receives roughly eleven pages. That is the number to hold a supplier to, and it is the number our fixed price covers.
A damaging admission: a new site does not rank on its own. It removes the obstacles — speed, structure, missing pages — and the ranking work is separate. A supplier selling a site as a ranking solution is selling two things and delivering one.
What does it cost?
Published, fixed, and quoted before anybody speaks to you.
| Product | Price |
|---|---|
| Price Transparency Pack | £890, ten working days |
| Firm Site | £2,400 |
| Firm Site+ | £4,200 |
| Authority Build | £6,900 |
| Retainer, monthly | £600 · £1,200 · £2,400 |
There is no minimum term on the retainer, and £700 comes off the build when it is taken with six months of retainer.
Of the 40 suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, twelve published a price at all, five of those published only a "from" figure, and one offered work with no minimum term.
| Across 40 suppliers | Count | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Published any price | 12 / 40 | 30% |
| Published only a "from" range | 5 / 40 | 13% |
| Claimed a guarantee | 8 / 40 | 20% |
| No minimum term | 1 / 40 | 3% |
Which product does a firm actually need?
The Price Transparency Pack if the site is otherwise sound. The Firm Site if it is not.
The pack builds the price and service pages only, on the existing site, and finishes in ten working days. It suits a firm whose website works but whose published information is thin. It is the cheapest way to close that gap and it does not require rebuilding anything.
The Firm Site is the whole thing: structure, pages, the price information, and the technical work that lets any of it be found. It suits a firm whose site is slow, old or missing most of the list above.
If you are unsure which, the free report says which items are absent from your own site. That is the point of it.
Who owns the site at the end?
The firm. Code, content, domain, hosting account and analytics, in the firm's name.
Worth putting in writing before signing with anybody, because the alternative arrangement is common and rarely stated plainly. A site a firm cannot take elsewhere is a subscription with a design attached.
Ask: if we leave, what do we take with us? A supplier who needs more than a sentence has answered.
What this is worth where you are
In London, 2,900 people a month search for immigration, and Google charges around £18.75 for one of those clicks. We hold the same figures for 52 cities.
The free report gives you yours, plus which of the pages the rules ask for are missing from your site, and what 40 suppliers charge.
No call required. Our own prices are on that page.
Where should I read next?
If the firm is a solicitor practice rather than a larger firm, solicitor website design covers the same work at that scale.
Once the site is right, the searches: law firm SEO covers organic, law firm PPC covers paid and why we never charge per enquiry, and lawyer SEO marketing covers the month-by-month sequence.
For the whole channel picture rather than the site alone, lawyer firm marketing.
Frequently asked questions
What do the SRA Transparency Rules require on a website?
Price and service information published for specified work types. In practice that covers the basis of charges, likely disbursements, indicative timescales, the qualifications and experience of those doing the work, and complaints information. The rules have been in force since 6 December 2018.
Can a supplier make my firm compliant?
No, and any supplier saying so is offering something it cannot give. Whether a firm complies is a judgement for the firm and its COLP. What a supplier can do is build the pages the rules ask for, and tell you factually which items are absent from the site as it stands.
How much does a law firm website cost?
Our Firm Site is £2,400, Firm Site+ £4,200 and Authority Build £6,900, all fixed and published. The Price Transparency Pack is £890 and takes ten working days. Retainers are £600, £1,200 or £2,400 a month with no minimum term.
Which should I buy, the pack or the full site?
The £890 pack if the site otherwise works and only the published information is thin, since it builds those pages on the existing site in ten working days. The Firm Site if the site is slow, old, or missing most of the required pages.
How many pages does a firm actually get?
A firm with two specified work types and three fee earners receives roughly eleven: home, one per practice area, one price and service page per work type, complaints information, one per fee earner, location and contact.
Will a new website make the firm rank?
Not on its own. It removes the obstacles to ranking — speed, structure, missing pages — but the ranking work is separate. A supplier selling a site as a ranking solution is selling two things and delivering one.
Who owns the website afterwards?
The firm: code, content, domain, hosting and analytics, all in the firm's name. Ask any supplier in writing what you take with you if you leave, and treat a long answer as the answer.
