Law firm SEO expert: one person, or an agency
There is no examination, register or admission behind the word "expert" in this field, so it carries no information on its own. What does carry information is the choice underneath the search: 1 individual, or a company. Each is right in different circumstances, and each fails differently.
Last updated: 5 August 2026
What does the word actually certify?
Nothing. It is a self-applied description, and that is worth saying first on a page selling to people who hold a qualification that took years.
A fee earner's title sits behind an examination, an admission and a register that a client can check. Nothing equivalent exists here. Anybody may put "law firm SEO expert" on a website this afternoon, and the phrase will be indistinguishable on the page from somebody who has spent fifteen years doing it.
So the search cannot be answered by finding the person who uses the word most confidently. It has to be answered by deciding what shape of supplier the firm needs, and then testing the claim by inspection. The rest of this page does both.
A damaging admission, early: we are not a single named expert, and a firm that wants one person who will know its file personally for the next decade should not retain us. That relationship is genuinely valuable and we do not offer it.
When is one individual the right choice?
Four situations, and none of them is exotic.
- The firm already has a site that works. When the technical foundation is sound and the need is judgement about what to write next, one experienced person is the whole requirement. An agency will sell a build the firm does not need.
- The practice is narrow and unusual. A firm doing one thing in one place needs somebody who understands that thing, not a team that has to be briefed on it.
- The budget is small and the alternative is a template. Below a certain fee, an agency has to reach for the production model to make the account work. A single practitioner at the same fee is doing it personally.
- Somebody at the firm will be involved. A marketing partner or practice manager who can hold the internal side turns a consultant into a working arrangement rather than a bottleneck.
In all four, the thing being bought is a judgement rather than a quantity, and judgement does not benefit from being spread across a department.
What happens when that person is unavailable?
The account stops, unless somebody wrote down what happens first.
This is the honest cost of the individual model, and it is rarely discussed before signing. Five ways it arrives:
| How availability ends | Typical warning | What to write into the engagement |
|---|---|---|
| Illness or family emergency | None | Who holds a copy of the work in progress, and where |
| A larger client arrives | Slower replies for weeks first | A stated response time, and what happens when it is missed |
| Career change or a salaried job | Sometimes a month | Notice period, and handover of files rather than access |
| Extended leave or travel | Usually known in advance | Dates declared at the start of each quarter |
| The relationship simply ends | Varies | Everything in the firm's own accounts from day one |
The last row is the one that decides how expensive the other four are. If the analytics property, the search console property, the listings and the drafts are all in the firm's own accounts, an absent consultant is an inconvenience. If they are in the consultant's accounts, an absent consultant is a rebuild.
Of the 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, 1 offered work with no minimum term. The other 39 tie a firm in for a period, which is a different exposure to the same underlying question: what a firm can do when the arrangement stops working.
How many crafts is one person being asked to cover?
Five, and almost nobody is strong at all of them.
- Technical work — crawling, indexing, page speed, rendering, structured data.
- Architecture — deciding how many pages exist and what each one is for.
- Writing — producing pages about law that a fee earner would sign.
- Listings and citations — the map results, which run on different signals entirely.
- Reporting — explaining to a partner, in prose, what changed and what it did.
The third is the one that decides whether any of the other four pay off, and the reason is measurable. AI Overviews now appear on 863 of the 1,235 keywords we measured on 3 August 2026 — 70% — and on 39 of the 54 money searches. A page is summarized and cited when it answers the question in its first forty words, and skipped when it opens with a paragraph of preamble. That is a writing judgement about a specific legal question, not a technical setting, and a technically excellent consultant who cannot write about law will produce a fast site nobody quotes.
Ask which of the five the individual is genuinely strong at, and who covers the other four. A candid answer to that question is the strongest signal available on this search.
How do you test the claim without a credential to check?
Five checks, each of which takes a partner under ten minutes.
- Read a page they wrote for another firm. Not a case study about it. The page itself.
- Ask what they would not do for you, and listen for whether anything is ruled out.
- Ask how they charge. Never per inquiry, per case or per matter — referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business and the restriction binds the paying firm as well as the party paid.
- Ask them to explain one thing they got wrong recently. People who have done this for years have an answer ready.
- Ask what would make them decline the account. No filter means no relevant bench of work.
Check one does most of the work. A page written about a practice area, read by somebody who practices in it, is nearly impossible to fake and takes five minutes to judge.
Check three has a second use. Most suppliers pitching law firms do not know the restriction exists, and the answer tells a partner what kind of market knowledge they are dealing with before any technical claim is tested.
What do the suppliers ranking for this publish?
Three named suppliers, and the only fact we will assert about any of them is whether a price appeared on the page.
| Supplier | Published a price, 3 Aug 2026 |
|---|---|
| magnifylab.com | Yes |
| rep-ink.com | No |
| onthemap.com | Yes |
Two of the three are in the minority of twelve that put a figure on the page at all. We are not going to state what any of them charges — the figures collected from these pages mixed genuine fees with unrelated numbers, and a wrong price attributed to a named business is not a mistake worth making.
None of the three, and none of the other 37, published who would personally do the work. On a search where the buyer is explicitly looking for a person, the market's published material does not identify one.
What does it cost, and which are we?
Practice Sprint $1,450, build tier $2,900. Fixed, published, no minimum term. Neither a lone consultant nor a large agency.
That is the honest position. We are small enough that the person writing read the brief, and large enough that a page in progress is not held in one person's head. What we cannot offer is the decade-long personal relationship the best independent consultants build, and a firm that wants that should go and find one.
We also do not manage ad spend. A firm that needs matters this quarter needs a specialist buying clicks daily, and that is a real reason to choose somebody else.
One illustration of why judgement is the thing being bought. In Seattle, 2,400 people a month search for immigration representation and 2,400 search for personal injury, measured 3 August 2026 — identical volumes. The immigration click costs $9.74 and the injury click costs $98.04. Same city, same volume, entirely different decision about where a firm's effort should go, and no tool makes that call for you.

Frequently asked questions
Is "law firm SEO expert" a qualification?
No. There is no examination, register or admission behind the phrase, so it certifies nothing on its own and anybody may use it. The search is better answered by deciding whether you want an individual or a company, then testing the claim by inspection.
When is a single consultant better than an agency?
When the site already works and the need is judgement about what to write, when the practice is narrow and unusual, when the budget is small enough that an agency would reach for a template, or when somebody at the firm can hold the internal side of the work.
What is the risk of retaining one person?
That availability ends without warning, through illness, a larger client, a career change, extended leave, or the relationship simply ending. The cost of each depends entirely on whether the accounts, listings and drafts sit in the firm's own name from day one.
What should the engagement say about continuity?
Where work in progress is held, a stated response time and what happens when it is missed, a notice period with files handed over rather than access granted, leave dates declared each quarter, and every account created in the firm's own name.
How many skills does search work actually involve?
Five: technical work, page architecture, writing about law, listings and citations, and reporting in prose. Few individuals are strong at all five, and the writing is the one that decides whether a page is cited, since AI Overviews appeared on 863 of the 1,235 keywords measured on 3 August 2026.
How do I test an expert's claim in ten minutes?
Read a page they wrote for another firm rather than a case study about it, ask what they would refuse to do, ask how they charge, ask what they got wrong recently, and ask what would make them decline your account.
Can a supplier charge per lead?
No. Referral fees are restricted in prescribed legal business and the restriction binds the paying firm as well as the party paid. We charge fixed fees by scope and time, and most suppliers pitching law firms do not know the restriction exists.
Are you an individual or an agency?
Neither, and both have advantages we lack. We cannot offer the decade-long personal relationship a good independent consultant builds, and we do not manage ad spend. Our prices are $1,450 and $2,900, fixed and published, with no minimum term.
