SEO for law firms in Australia: three kinds of visibility
Being found on Google used to mean one thing. It now means 3 separate visibilities — ordinary results, AI-generated answers and the map — and each is won by different work. A firm can rank first in ordinary results and be entirely absent from the answer a person actually reads.

What is SEO in law firms?
It is the work of appearing in three separate places, each with its own rules.
| Where | What decides it | What it is worth |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary results | Pages that answer the search, and sites that are trusted | Steady, compounding, slow to arrive |
| AI-generated answers | Clear factual sentences a machine can lift and attribute | Growing fast, appears above everything |
| The map | Verified location, categories, reviews, proximity to the searcher | Immediate intent, often a phone call |
On 39 of the 54 highest-value legal searches we measured on 3 August 2026, Google generated an AI answer above the ordinary results. A firm ranking third organically on those searches sits below a block that may already have answered the question.
What work does each one need?
Different work, which is why buying one does not deliver the others.
For ordinary results: pages that do not currently exist. One per practice area the firm wants more of, one per fee earner, and one for each question people ask before choosing a firm. Plus the technical layer — page speed, mobile rendering, structured data, internal links.
For AI answers: the same pages, written differently. A machine lifting an answer needs a direct one, early, in a complete sentence, with a number in it where a number applies. A page that spends four paragraphs establishing tone before answering is not quotable. This is the cheapest of the three to fix and the one most often skipped.
For the map: a verified listing, correct categories, real reviews, and an address where the firm can actually be found. This is the one we cannot do much about, because it depends on facts about the firm rather than words on a site.
Which of the three should a firm do first?
The AI answer layer, because it is the cheapest and the gap is widest.
Rewriting existing pages so they answer directly costs a fraction of building new ones, and on 39 of 54 measured searches it is the layer sitting above everything else. Most firms' pages fail it for a structural reason rather than a quality one: they open with positioning instead of an answer.
Then ordinary results, which take months and compound. Then the map, which usually needs the firm to change something about itself rather than about its website.
What is not included?
Three things, stated plainly so they are not discovered later.
- We do not manage advertising spend. If the firm needs matters this quarter, ads are the correct channel and this is not.
- We do not solve intake. What happens after an enquiry arrives is operational and sits inside the firm. It determines whether any of this was worth buying.
- We give no advice about professional obligations. Australia has no rule requiring firms to publish prices, so showing fees here is a commercial decision. A firm's obligations are a matter for the firm and its own advisers.
What does it cost?
A$1,900 for the sprint, A$4,200 for the build. Fixed, published, no minimum term.
The sprint is the AI-answer layer and the technical fixes on pages that already exist. The build adds the pages that do not.
Of 40 legal-marketing suppliers we read in full on 3 August 2026, twelve published a price at all, five showed only a "from" range, eight claimed a guarantee of some kind, and one offered work with no minimum term.
We never charge per enquiry or per matter, and never promise a position or a number of enquiries. Nobody controls those, and eight of forty suppliers say otherwise.
How long does each layer take?
Weeks for the first, months for the second, and the third depends on facts we do not control.
- AI answers: changes can be picked up within weeks, though nothing is guaranteed and Google gives no notice either way.
- Ordinary results: three to four months for movement, six to nine before fair judgement. The first quarter shows impressions rising while clicks stay flat — the signature of pages climbing from position 30 toward 11, and indistinguishable from failure without the data.
- The map: immediate if the listing is wrong and gets corrected; otherwise limited by the firm's actual location.
What this is worth where you are
In Brisbane, 8,800 people a month search for family law, and Google charges around A$24.29 for one of those clicks. We hold the same figures for 52 cities.

No call required. Our own prices are on that page.
Where should I read next?
If you have not decided whether to do this at all: lawyer seo marketing makes the case against as well as for.
On the work itself: law firm seo services covers scope and delivery.
If the site is the constraint: website design for lawyers covers rebuilding rather than adding pages.
Wider than search: marketing agency for law firm and marketing for lawyer.

What is SEO in law firms?
The work of appearing in three separate places: ordinary results, AI-generated answers, and the map. Each has its own rules and needs different work, so buying one does not deliver the other two.
How often does Google show an AI answer on legal searches?
On 39 of the 54 highest-value legal searches we measured on 3 August 2026. A firm ranking third organically on those searches sits below a block that may have already answered the question.
Which layer should a firm fix first?
The AI answer layer. It is the cheapest, because it means rewriting existing pages rather than building new ones, and the gap is widest. Most pages fail it structurally: they open with positioning instead of an answer.
Why do most law firm pages fail the AI layer?
They spend several paragraphs establishing tone before answering. A machine lifting an answer needs a direct one, early, in a complete sentence, with a number where a number applies.
What can you not do?
Manage advertising spend, fix intake, or advise on professional obligations. Intake in particular determines whether any of this was worth buying, and it sits inside the firm rather than with a marketing supplier.
What does it cost?
A$1,900 for the sprint, A$4,200 for the build, fixed and published, with no minimum term. The sprint covers the AI layer and technical fixes to existing pages; the build adds pages that do not exist.
Do you guarantee rankings?
No. Nobody controls Google's results. Of 40 suppliers read on 3 August 2026, eight claimed a guarantee of some kind and twelve published a price at all.
